front diff open or lsd?

Postby Stu on Sun Aug 17, 2008 4:04 pm

Can somebody let me know whether the front diff is open or lsd, I think it's open. The reason being that a few weeks ago I was out with my brother in his mid 90's pajero and we came across a reasonable log on the track, he pulled up to it until his front tyres were touching then just walked straight over it, I struggled and took three tries & a bit of wheelspin to get over

no mate, I'm running 32" m/t and he was on road tyres and it was wet, maybe the paj has lsd or something in the front?

Ahh, I should have looked on your Shed profile and learned that myself

Wonder if the Paj had more weight in the right place, which gave it an added traction advantage? :?:

i don't think you can have LSD in the front diff as there is to much difference in wheel rotation going round corners and steering.

What model is the Paj? does it have traction control?
If so this would explain it

Mid 90's gls, I'm pretty sure it doesn't have traction control.

Does it have a front locker of any type?

Unless he's had an aftermarket diff conversion to a locking system the standard Pajero front diffs were all open and they had LSD rears. I found that both NH and NM Paj seemed to have better grip than the MK. Maybe it was weight distribution because I don't think it was suspension one being torsion bar and the other coil sprung. They are certainly a bit shorter especially in wheelbase and this may have some bearing too as with the LSD's which I'll swear worked better than the Triton.

Really though, too many factors here to say why the Paj got over easier - tyre pressures, weight, gearing (auto or manual - the auto tends to be better at this kind of stuff), choice of gear, weight of right foot, whether the Paj chewed up the surface a little making it more slippery, whether you tried to tackle at a different angle...the list goes on. One log is not the measure of your truck's capability.

In that case, lots of ballast to crush the mesily log that your brother had to drive over, preferably with 'ride of the valkyrie' blearing as woodchips fly in all directions!! .

It could have been a rear locker that gave all the traction, the front wheels are probably not so important?

I'll just have to put it down to "one of those things"
My triton does almost everything easier than his paj but this was one thing he showed me up on
