Take off shudder - no lift

Postby tassietriton on Sun Nov 16, 2008 6:52 pm

Has anyone noticed a shudder when taking off in 1st?
The shudder is also really bad in 1st coming up my steep driveway (at anything under 3000 odd rpm).
Is this the same shudder as you get when you do a lift but just made worse?

i know some ppl said they could feel a hint of shudder before lifting their cars, so i guess they all do it from stock, some more than others. your's mightbe one of them that is a little bit more than others, either that or you knew what to look for from us discussing the issue all the time

I bought the stealer mechanic over and took him up the driveway to show him the shudder.
All he said was "they all do that"!

Tassie.

Rather than referring you to all the other posts and topics on the "shudder"...just rotate the centre bearing 180 degrees. This will drop the centre bearing down by approx 8mm and should get rid of the shudder.

It's a 5 min job.

Just under the 2 nuts on top of the centre bearing towers on the cross member, push up the centre bearing in the U shaped cradle, rotate the cradle 180 degrees so the bearing is hanging below the U shaped cradle (was previously sitting in it) and do up the nuts again.

I gather from other posts that Mitsubishi now see this as a solution that won't void the drivetrain warranty?
If that is the case I will tell the stealer to do that as well as replacing the suction control valve and/or the ECU and doing whatever else is required to fix the surging when cold issue when the car goes in on Tuesday.
Given that the fix apperas so simple, do you reckon it was meant to be installed the other way up?

The Toowoomba dealership is now doing it as standard to remove the shudder...we spent a lot of time arguing with Mitsubishi reps to get them to agree with it. A number of suspension professionals reckon the "upside down version" looks correct where the factory one does not make sense?

Have a look at this link:

It shares all the information we originally had on the subject.

Occasionally I think I get a slight shudder on takeoff with no lift...

HEy Jit's yep I got the shudder before I added leaf spring helpers
and better shocks, this made it worse but the center tail shaft rotation fixed in my case almost 100%, and my dealer had no issue with the mod in terms of warranty, I believe they even rotate on request by owners, though don't initially offer this solution, might be a case of not wanting to overly advertise it is an issue with many of the Tritons (my memory serves correct dont think autos have the same problem, think tail shaft is set out different on them.

Mine has a slight shudder upon take on but only very slight, i think the autos do have a centre bearing of some sort, just not the same as the manuals, and this one cannot be turned around. Maybe the tailshaft spacer might fix this for me! I measure up againts my sisters boyfriends triton (stock) and i have around 4.5" lift all round compared to his.

Fixed.
Head technician at the local dealership took the car for two days to experience first hand the shudder and the surging/hesitation when cold.
I sent him an email telling him how to rotate the centre tailshaft bearing and explaining how MMA had accepted that method as a fix for the shudder.
HE DID IT and the shudder is all but gone! AT LAST!!
He also re-set the timing and now the surging/hesitation appears to have gone as well.
Well done Mrs Bitchy, well done.

I reckon next time I come up with a solution, I am going to patent it first.

Why couldn't Mitsubishi get it right to start with???
