Kinugawa turbo upgrade 4M41

Postby Dyl383 on Tue Jul 07, 2015 4:11 pm

Anyone had any experience with these? Was thinking it might be a bit more of a simple upgrade as compared to the TD04.

Can't comment on that turbo specifically but I know from a Subaru forum I'm on, that a lot of guys have bought turbos from that seller/brand and they have been good quality and happy with them. They were mostly buying td05/06s

I've bought parts from them in the past, oil/water lines and gaskets etc.
They seemed to be decent quality and did the job.
Again, these were for Subaru.

Can't comment on the turbos but I recall some chat on Rexnet about them, and opinions were mixed I think.

If it were me, I wouldn't be putting cheap parts on my car.

Those turbos are fine. Possibly as good or even better than OEM.

I have fitted one to 4M41 some time ago and about to do another very soon. Have the turbo sitting here.

I'd still feel better spending $2k on a turbo though, even though my wallet wouldn't :-)

Thanks Tony, what are they like performance wise as compared to the OEM? Mines at 22psi but doesn't get there until 2400. Was hoping to get a bit more out of it lower in the rev range? Would I be better going for the TD04?

Are you running a boost controller?
I'll have to check mine, but i thought I was getting higher PSI at lower RPM

I am mate. Turbosmart boost controller. 22 is about as much as I can get out of mine it may come on a tad earlier than 2400 but would like more around the 2000rpm mark. Whats yours set at?

This cartridge is not a major upgrade, only mild. Does flow more and proof is we instantly encountered mass air flow meter high input circuit issues. (easily overcome) ;)

Perhaps a little bit more initial lag, but will give you enough torque on launching to screw your eyeballs out.

Without getting into explaining aspect ratios etc, stepping up to a larger turbo can be a compromise, more for big HP at expense of some low end torque.

Getting the most from the above setup all depends on what tuning you have or plan. You need more fuel to heat the now larger furnace.

Expect around 30% to 50% gain in torque and easily another 30 to 40kw at rear wheels.

There is a bit in platinum area on one of these. The next one will be in same place however tuned differently as we don't want fuel pumps becoming disposable items.

Thanks tony are you referring to the TD04 of the TF035?

I have been looking at changing my tuning setup, im running the DMS ecu piggyback with boost cut module that was around a few years ago. Probably out dated compared to what's available now. It has been reliable and and still delivers good power but im just after a little bit more down low for towing and when im loaded up touring. Too much is never enough

Has anyone high flowed the standard turbo? Im tempted to either high flow as i have a second ml turbo sitting here or i have also been looking at buying a quick spool manifold and running a sti turbo or something similar. I will be getting a tune done as soon as the turbo is finished.

Before touching the turbo, I'd be doing something about the inlet manifold, its a shocking design.

What can we do with the intake manifold?

I have found the standard manifold (assuming the swirl butterflies are free and do 100% open) is good enough for a mild turbo upgrade.

Thats abit expensive haha for that sort of cash i would test my machining abilities hahaha im not after stupid power i want to keep it reliable and high flowing the turbo is like 200 more than just a rebuild so i would be stupid not to do it.

I can get a custom header made to suit what ever turbo i want for around the 400 mark so was toying with the idea of a different turbo but might be easier just to high flow instead, has anyone high flowed the standard turbo yet?

I'm running this turbo upgrade have been for couple years now, not a huge difference IMHO and not worth the money when a td05 upgrade costs the same or close too.

I'm curious if anyone has high flowed their 2.5 yet? Or installed one of these https://speedupautoparts.com.au/billet- ... 5a029.html
I put the 3" on a while ago, had the ECU flashed (stupidly let him talk me out of EcuTeK) and as I don't really do a lot of towing I'm looking for a bit more low end torque and claw back on the turbo lag. High Flowing sounds promising.
