Towing in 4th gives a 1:1 ratio where as 5th gear is 1:0.8 (ish) which would put more strain on the gears, so I would only tow on 4th unless it was a light trailer or long slope downhill.

After talking to many gearbox people over the last few weeks the general idea is that it's fine to tow in 5th but if it's a heavy load (1.5t and up) then 4th is a better option when going up hill.
Having a chip, exhaust, bigger tyres, and 2.5t of boat then planting the foot in 5th to get up hills is probably not the best idea for gearbox longevity. I may have been guilty of this practice in the past :(

On a side note not using 5th for the last month or so and still doing a few long trips as well as towing the boat my fuel usage has not changed at all. 9.5-10.5l/100 not towing and closer to 12 when towing.

Cool, thanks. Not a heavy boat. I do change down if it's steep.

If you're running a light pedal at around 100-110 then there shouldn't be any major strain on the gear.

If you're pushing down on the loud pedal to maintain speed it may be better to drop some speed and drop to 4th.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!

Hey Guys & Gals, just bringing this post up again as my gearbox in mine has completely shat itself. Any ideas of any other replacement options available for the 4M41T. I know there a few V5MB1 doing the rounds but not entirely sure on the differences in these.

Thanks in advance
