Clutch choice

Postby BillMcQuade on Thu Mar 09, 2017 11:54 am

I have to replace my clutch, and am tossing up between an Exedy Safari and a 4 Terrain Heavy Duty (made by PBR).

Both are significantly better than OEM, and cost approximately the same, but I would be interested to hear the opinions/experiences of those who are running them in their Tritons.

I run an Exedy HD in my last MN and used to give it a hiding off road. Never had a smell from it in 60,000km.
The OEM it replaced used to stink big time after a 4wding outing

Up for a new clutch soon after 75k kms but i tow every day. When its not the work trailer its the camper or box trailers. Interested in what others are getting. I also run on 265x75x16 (32") tyres

Mine started slipping at 60k and is shagged at 90k. Admittedly, it gets the occasional hard time off-road and I also have to back my caravan up a steep hill.

Replaced mine at 95K but only because the gearbox was coming out for warranty work.
Only cost to me, apart from the clutch cost, was flywheel machining.
Still had plenty of life left in it

A bit more homework has revealed that the 4 Terrain uses the same diaphragm plate and (nodular iron) pressure plate as the Exedy Safari. This assembly is made in Japan.

The difference is the friction plate, with PBR and Exedy each selecting different damper springs and friction materials. The PBR plate runs a different friction material on the flywheel side. PBR make the friction plate here, and the Exedy is made in Japan.

I have decided to go with the 4 Terrain. I will update with an unboxing and installation.

Don't forget to check these guys out... A division of Aus clutch services...
I've been very impressed with their clutch.
http://www.xtremeoutback.com.au/en/
Done nearly 160k punishing kms on it and still good as new. However you definitely notice a much heavier pedal feel than standard... I'm okay with it but some other people sook about it being too heavy.

I'm up to 130,000ks with the OEM clutch. A lot of that, towing a 6m boat and a horse float and still going......

You'll probably get a fair bit out of it yet. General towing won't really cause any problems. What finally killed mine was backing my ~2T van up my 45 degree, narrow, curved, goat-track driveway on a regular basis. I was surprised that it lasted until 90K. Do that with your horse float, and you will be up for a clutch before you know it.

So i have been chasing prices for a new clutch and $1620 for the exeedy safari fitted is the best i have come up with. Does this sound about right? They quoted $660 for the clutch supply before i asked about fitting.

$660 for the clutch is a good price, as long as it's a genuine Exedy Safari.

The standard times book allows 5.5 hours for fitting, so $940 is a bit steep, even allowing $70 for the flywheel machining, and a bit of top-up oil. That's nearly $150/hr for labour. I was quoted $650 for the fit, by a mechanic with a lot of Triton experience.

I gave them the part number that I got direct from exeedy so should be genuine. He did say that price includes new oils. Sad to say but $150 per hour is about right for canberra mechanic prices from my experience. Could anyone recommend a good clutch specialist in canberra?

Been quite abusive to my clutch lately... (probably should look at reduction gears)

Have been getting some gnarly smells when the going gets tough, no slipping (yet). Do i bite the bullet and pre-empt the inevitable, or do I milk the stock clutch for every k it's worth and hope I don't destroy it too far from home?

Just about to book in for the 90k service too which is going to hurt as well.

Guess it depends on if you can put up with your ute off road for a week or so if it does go completely. I need my ute for work and towing every day so went the safe way and replaced earlier rather later. About same kms on mine when i replaced my clutch

I think I got around 175 or 180k out of my ome one before my gearbox gave up and needed to come out so put a new one in. I run 265 75 R16 tyres, do a bit of towing, city start stop driving and offroad work so was pretty happy to get that many k's from it. I replaced it with a 4 terrain as I previously had one in my old patrol and could not fault it. If I recall correctly I paid around $600 for the kit which I purchased directly from clutch industry's which has been pretty good.
