Clunk - Grease Yoke?

Postby ozguy7 on Fri Jun 01, 2018 3:40 pm

Hi all, pretty much what the title says. I'm getting a solid clunk where the rear drive shaft enters the transfer case. Im pretty sure the U joints are fine as i cant feel any movement at all.

From what I've read, the yoke spline might need to be greased. Does this seem likely? It sounds like an easy enough job but I've read that with 4wds you shouldn't apply grease as it gets back and mixes with the transmission fluid.

Any thoughts?

Do you grease all the nipples on the drive shafts?

Have you checked the engine & gearbox mounts?

The anti - roll mount on the gearbox/transfer case (on the left side) might be munted.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!

The only nipples I've seen are the one on the Universals which I planned on greasing too. Are there others?

Pretty sure the engine mounts are fine but I do notice the transfer case moves quite a bit when going between reverse and drive. This coincides with the clunk.

I found the gearbox mounts and they seem ok. Will have a look for the anti roll mount.

Cheers

Turns out the auto doesn't have an anti roll mount. Other mounts all seem fine.

Might give the unis a grease first and see. They've only done 35K

So greasing the u joints made no difference. The clunk us still there seems to be coming from where the driveshaft enters the transfer case.

Not sure what to look at next

Well today I dropped the driveshaft and applied some grease to the slip yoke.

Made zero difference.

Guessing that even though the uni joint seems fine, it has an issue. The noise does goes away in 4wd interestingly.

I checked the transfer case oil level today. Finger in the hole and couldn't find any so might be low.

Could this cause clunking / gear flaring?

If its like the Diff oil levels they run well below the filler hole, using an allan key resting on the filler plug hole as a guide,?????? got me stuffed why they do that, spoke to a few Gearbox / Diff rebuilders even one Mitsubishi service dept they just fill to bottom of filler hole

So on my trek to sort out my woes last thing on my list is the front diff bushes. There are three support bushes that I have tipped to be completely shagged. If that’s not the fix I’m going to burn the thing to the ground

Hi,

Did you end up finding the cause of your noise? I’ve got a similar sound but it came about after the clutch was changed. I’m hoping it is a dry slip yoke...
