ML REAR DIFF IDENTIFICATION

Postby aplus on Thu Sep 26, 2019 9:52 pm

Hi All.
How do I identify what type of limited Slip rear diff I have in my ML.
I need to know wether it is Multi plate or Non-Multi plate without removing it and taking it apart.
My vehicle data plate has options E35, D52, D65 stamped on it but I don't know what these codes relate to.
The identification plate is stamped Trans Axle V5MB1 4300

Thanks in advance.

Pretty sure the LSD in the ML/MN was a torsen style lsd with a viscous coupling. So no plates to worry about.

Thanks aids84.
Trying to decipher oil viscosity for rear diff.
Service manual says different oil for multi-plate and non multi-plate.
But I'm sure most modern oils will be suffice regardless of diff type.
Thanks again.

Yeah the Hybrid diff doesn't need a oil designed for used in plate type LSD's. Just your normal 80w90 will do just fine.

That trans axle code means
5 speed manual
4.3 diff gear ratio

So you have a petrol, as that ratio was not offered in any other vehicle

Hi All

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this, however, I keep getting conflicting info from different wreckers.

Can someone please confirm that an ML 4.1 and 4.3 differentials are 12 bolt for the rear and 8 bolt for the front?

Cheers

I recently replaced mine (09 ML) & used Penrite's selector guide. http://www.penriteoil.com.au/product-selector
code GO80900025 x 2 (2.5lt ea) total capacity 3.2lt

Hey can anyone help me out quickly just came across a good deal and dont want to miss out.

So can i confirm all MLs are 12bolts. Even the 3.917 because i know its not a common ratio on the ML? Also the lsd has the carrier with 4 small holes where the open centre you can see the spider gears is that right?

So theoretically this should bolt straight into my MN bolt no worries shouldnt it?

See pic below if that helps to ID but because of angle its hard to count the bolt holes.Click to view larger picture
