MN transfer swap to MQ or MR

Postby ISHC on Wed Mar 23, 2022 4:20 am

Hi all,

I own a 2014, 2.5, manual MN.
The car works great as an off roader but the 1.9 low ratio is a bit weak.
In the MQ and MR later models the low ratio 8s 2.56, q 35% reduction!!! If I can fit the whole manual gearbox it maybe even better as i will ern a 6 speeds gearbox and a better cruzing and better fuel consumption.
Has anyone done this conversion?

Bellhousing is totally different. Plus the 6 speed is a weak gearbox compared to the old 5 speed

Ok, so last 2 option:
1. Is it possible to swap the gears only without the case?
2. Can the aftermarket 2.71 reduction can be installed in the MN transfer without grinnding or any other major rework?

As for your comment on it being weak? i have not heard of a MN transfer box failing during normal use.

Thanks.
I'm sorry but you misunderstood what I mean. When I wrote "weak" I was refering to the gear ratio and bot the overall strength of the transfer case.

There are aftermarket options that can be installed into the existing case. Quite a few mentions scattered through the forum.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Yep, it's best to go with after market reduction gear option. There's two ratios to choose from 2.7 and the 3.15.

My advice is go with the 3.15, you're going to all that expense anyway so you might as well. There's a little extra work in grinding the casing and shift fork but totally worth it, mine still going strong 10years on.

Certainly the best off road mod I did to my MN. So good that I recently did it on my 100series lc.
