2.5 broken timing belt question

Postby nigb on Mon Nov 14, 2022 6:16 pm

I have a broken timing belt. Some of rocker arms have broken obviously where pistons have hit valves. The valves seem nearly perpendicular to the head. This being the case I was wondering if the valves would be bent? I figure if I do a compression test & is good I just replace rockers? Anyone else had experience with this? Thanks.

If rocker arms are bent then chances are that valves will also be damaged, maybe also pistons and conrods. Depending on how many and extent of damage you're likely looking at a head replacement or substantial overhaul/reconditioning.

Thanks for reply. I now have head off & as I expected no bent valves or thankfully damaged pistons. However the force of the pistons hitting some of the valves has broken some of the rocker arms & sheared a couple of the camshaft cap retaining bolts. Still deciding which way to go. Fully assembled heads on Ebay $852 but not sure of quality.

Probably worth taking head to a specialist for a qualified assessment.

Then you can make an informed decision.

I had a jeep head machined and it leaked like a sieve due to I initially overheating.. A reco head was a straightforward bolt on fix.

Update. Chris you were correct on closer examination a crack in number 1 piston. I will have to carefully check the others

Bad luck. Unfortunately when two mechanical parts collide the damage is usually significant.

You can take some small consolation that you only have four cylinders - I had six.
