Ok so looking at the specs i found, all the MN GLX 5speed manuals get the same 3.692 final gear ratio, the 4speed autos get the the 3.9 like the GLX-R and interestingly the GL-R 4speed auto gets a 4.1

The manual and transfer gears are all the same so i guess it would be ideal to swap out to the 4.1 diff centres.
Does anyone with a GL-R auto wanna swap their diff centres?

So has anyone changed diff or transfer gear ratios? I really want to keep my 32's but starting to think they are just a little too big for my 3.6 diff. Its not so bad while i'm not carrying any weight but it really bogs down with some load on the back.

srb i like you have the same diff ratio as i too am a fellow club cab driver. i was looking at putting on some 245/75/16 tyres on so anyone know how much difference they will make to the factory low range and general driving.

thanks

Hi bulldeye, yeah It is a bit annoying that mitsu put the higher ratios in our trucks.:- But it's not all that bad, you get very good top end on the highway.
I,m running 245/75/16 bfg's and they are fine. I did try 265's and they felt too sluggish when I was loaded. The 245 have been good on and offroad and has put the speedo correct. I would imagine it puts the gear ratio similar to those with the 3.9 diffs running 265's.

hey srb well that sounds good to hear that the 245 are ok to use. how about in low range are they ok or is the truck a little faster seeing as they are a little bigger than standard. according to bridgestone the 205r16c that come stock with it have a OD of 737mm.
stupid question but have you got any lift in your truck at the moment.

Yeah have 2" lift now but had the tyres on before the lift with no problems. I can notice it crawls a bit quicker in low range but is ok, not great on the vertical stuff but can be managed. Unfortunately the Triton has too higher transfer gear to make it a good rock crawler. But that wont be for long! A few of us have low ratio transfer gear coming soon. Whoo! Can't wait for this.

Hey mate with your 2inch lift have you noticed any drivline shudder seeing as it has the two piece shaft. I'm really concerned about Lo range with the bigger tyre. I don't go off roading much we mainly use it for hunting trips but some times the terrain really is goat country and can be.quite steep. If you don't mind me asking how much were the lower gears for.the transfers .
Thanks srb

I get a small amount of shudder only in hi 1st gear under load but nothing to worry about. I don't feel it in low range at all.
I reckon the tyre size is a good compromise, gives you good clearance and feel off road without feeling too big for the standard gearing. The new transfer gears cost $1250, not cheap but will be well worth it as they won't be doing them again in the extra low ratio 3.15. There is a thread on this, search "wholesale automatics" for more information. Not sure if there's any left though.

From the Brochure (added Challenger and Hilux for kicks) and to see if any of the bits are interchangeable.

Drive Train Specs. (click on pics to get full sized)

Interesting data- the petrol has a larger alternator than the diesel.
Petrol also gets 4.3 diff gears
Petrol is discontinued in the MN Triton

The standard tyre size on the triton is 29.5" (0.5" above the hilus standard) and the challenger with the same running gear as the MN triton is around 30.5". As you are aware increasing tyre sizes affects gearing and because the Triton has a 1:1 straight through configuration in the transfer case, this cannot be changed so let's look at the the theoretical Diff ratio required so that the drive train is returned the stock specification. This varies based on the stock diff ratios from the table above.

Ratios required to run larger tyres

this shows- poorly represented- see the required ratio column, that for the ML triton diesel (with 4.1 final ratio) that it requires 4.4 diff ratio when running on 32" tyres- nearest stock ratio is the petrols 4.3 :geek:

The MN to return to stock because of the standard diff ratio of 3.9 would require 4.2 (nearest is the ML tritons 4.1 8-) )
Interesting if you run the NM and 33" tyres you can achieve very near stock drive train ratios if running the 4.3 diffs.....

Now I have not gone further into this to check if the above will be interchangeable within the Triton range of diff carriers
But hopefully when we get confirmed info regarding the MN front ARB diff lock all will be good.

Crawler gears

And this is what I was trying to work out.
Low range transfer gears for the triton are available, we run the same transfer case as the gen2 pajeros (needs to be confirmed for the MN)

Bitsamissin wrote
Hello Mark Hardman and myself have put a lot of work into making low range reduction gears for Pajero's. They are the same gears that are sold by Marks 4WD Adapters but are actually manufactured by Hardman Bros here in Melbourne and are available for purchase direct from him.
Basically there are :-
- 2.85 which fits Gen 1 & 2 auto & 5sp (2.6, 3.0, 2.3 & 2.5 diesels) will also fit 5sp Challengers & Tritons
- 3.15 which fits Gen 2 auto (3.5 & 2.8TDI) it will fit a 5sp but with shifter rail modifications
- 3.15 which fits Gen 3 auto (3.5, 3.8 & 3.2GDI) - these gears are totally different to the earlier model 3.15 ratio
The Gen 2 3.15's will fit the ML Triton as the t/case gear part no's are the same as late model Gen 2 Paj's.
These gears transform Pajero's offroad especially if you run larger tyres as the standard gearing is barely adequate.

SO.... there are available off the shelf ratio for the transfer case of 1: 3.15 (standard is 1.9)
So A MN GLX-r fitted with 4.1 diffs and transfer case "crawler gears" will achieve a crawl ratio of 55-1 (better than a stock 5 speed manual 105 series cruiser) and nearly double that of the stock vehicle (stock MN 5 speed auto 28-1)

Very nice addition to have if increasing the tyres diameter.

So in closing there are a few items to be cleared up, but I though I would share some of the data.

can someone please confirm this for me please.. i am thinking that i need to change my gear ratio's to 4.2 from 3.9 for my MN man triton if i want to permanently run 265/75R16's to have the same power and fuel economy as standard 3.9 with 245/70R16's in my MN? i'm not sure of i am reading this properly... and if i am correct does anyone know how much it would cost me to buy the diff's with the ratio?

yeah... totally agree. awesome stuff!
got me thinking... wonder if 9.5 inch diffs (4.2 ratio's) with rear lsd and front lokka is cheaper than twin air/ electric lockers?
hmmm.... the cook is going to have a heart attack when i justify this! lol

Looking at the man5spd box ratios, does the Hilux and Tri manual models share the same g'box?

Hi Guys,

I'm looking at swapping out the 3.6 poverty pack diffs for the 4.1's out of a mn auto. I'm just curious, is the MN Auto 4.1 rear diff a 9" or is it the same as the ML 9.5". I haven't seen anything to really confirm this.

Cheers.

I don't think it matters- the 4.1 gears fit either the 9" housing OR the 9.5" housing
as seen by Fraz- in his build up thread- linked to 3 posts up.

note that the smaller housing was also able to have the larger axles- big selling point for the pajero- never been known to be busted :D

going for a larger ratio like the 4.3 (of the petrol ML) or 4.6 (from the gen 2 pajero) will in my opinion require the larger housing ;)

Stevie, I have just swapped out my GLX 3.692 ratios for the 3.917's and It's so much better! The 4.1's would have been better and thanks to Fraz we now know they fit apart from the rear axle splines. But I was running out of time and the opportunity came around and fell at my feet for the right price. Anyway I can now run 32'' tyres without it bogging down in the rev's when loaded. When I had the 31'' tyres my gearing was ok but no good for the 32's  Now that I have 32's and 3.9 diffs my gearing is exactly the same as when I was running the 31's and 3.6 diffs a 6% increase for both. ;) The swap was fairly easy because I had the complete diffs. The front I did myself in my driveway at home but had to get the rear diff done by a specialist because I had to get the the crown and pinion removed from mine as I have the factory locker center and the 3.9 donor diff was an open diff.

Before I installed the front diff I thought I midas well get a front locker installed for good measure.  I then thought oh what the hell and got some 3.15 reduction gears installed in the transfer case. And yes the crawling capability now is simply amazing!! No more crashing and banging, clutch burning, wheel spinning out of control. Just smooth slow control. 8-) Twin locked also helps.

It's been a real learning curve for me and quite enjoyable one, learning about the mechanic's of how it all works and comes apart is great confidence for when going bush. For example... I can now remove and replace CV's easily.

Honestly, I can't see why the ML's 4.3 Petrol ratios wouldn't fit straight into the standard Triton housings. The axle housings are all the same across the ML and early MN Tritons (MY12-on MN Triton's don't have the front diff actuator). 4.6's may be an issue though.

As for the axles, I'm not sure whether you'd have to change them if you were sticking with an MN diff centre. You may find it's the same centre as the 3.9's, but I'm honestly not sure. I had to change my axle shafts as the ML's LSD Centre has a 31 spline input, where the MN's open centre has a 29 spline.

It would definitely be interesting to see whether you could fit the 4.6's out of an early pajero, because from memory they share the same 8.25" front diff as the triton. 8-) So, who's game?
