Hi all,

People have suggested I come here to get advice regarding the following:
I have a South Africa Pajero Sport, this has a 3.2DiD (4m41) engine, V4A5A 4 speed auto with super select and 4.1 diff ratios.
The standard tyre size is 265/70R16 and I was thinking of going for 235/85R16 or 265/75R16. This is a little more than 3% larger and I was wondering if anyone had experience with similar sizes and whether the auto box likes it or not. I don't wish to have unnecessary heat and fuel wastage caused by slippage at speeds around 100kmh.

I have the same engine and auto and diff ratios
I have run both those tyre in mud terrain tyres (Goodyear mtr) lots of kms

Not sure of your current economy as a base, but was getting around 11.5 l/100 kms with full steel bar work and canopy (2200kgs)
Got slightly better with the narrower but taller 235/85/16 I ran these on +15 offset rims

Slippage, well the auto is not the best but adequate with the 32" tyres
When I added 2 tonnes behind the fuel/ slippage was not acceptable and I got a torque converter lockup switch

I have since swapped out the diff gears from 4.1 to 4.6, mainly to run 33" tyres or tow

The base combination is fine for 32" tyres, but tow or go larger tyres and things go bad quick

I have 180,000 kms now using 32" tyres from delivery

Thanks for the reply. My current economy is close to 10l/100km it seems (I recently got this car and am still trying to figure out how much the computer is lying. It says 9l/100 for the last 550km).
I'm not planning on towing frequently if at all. About once a year it will be loaded with about 300kg for overlanding other than that it will be just driven to work and back.

The computer lies
10 would be about right
If you use AT tyres in the larger diameter might go up to 10.5 or 11
Mud terrain gets worse

The auto at 100 should still lock up, if the auto ecu uses the same parameters (think you might have better shift points than ours due to having larger tyres shipped as standard ( we have 29.5" or 245/65/17, rather than your 31")

It should lock up at 1900 rpm and at 100 km/ h you do around 2000rpm on 32" tyres so works but still variables like what the factory have set up and your driving style

Digging up an old thread as i search for info on my driveline as i get more into 4wding and start to realise limitations in my vehicle...

Looking at changing diff ratios. Only had experience with 3 tritons in person so far, but getting info from a variety of sources. I have had experience with :
09 mn glr 4spd auto 4.1 diffs asc vac actuated front
11 mn glx 4spd auto 4.1 diffs safety pack (asc 6 airbags) vac actuated front
12 mn glx manual 3.917 diffs asc no vac actuator???
All have flares and 7" wheels. Both autos have a 10 bolt carrier. The manual has a 12... no mention has been made so far of this difference, only in difference of 9 or 9.5" ring gear. I have assumed so far that the 10 bolt is a 9" and the 12 bolt a 9.5". This fits with the manual having 400 nm, the auto only 350nm. Are mls the same, or do they all run a 10 bolt carrier like an auto because of the lower torque output?

Ideally, i want to swap my 3.917s for 4.3s so i can keep the factory speedo difference after moving from my current stock 245 70 16s to 265 75 16s. So I'm trying to find gears compatible with my carrier. So far the ml v6 looks the best bet.

Also looking for crawler gears, but one thing at a time.

MLs are all 9.5 in think. 4.3s are anyway. I bought a set but decided it was too hard given I already had twin arb lockers.

Back on track tho... the 10 bolt are 9" and the 12 bolt are 9.5" then?

Do all ml and mn tritons run same size front diff? Same as nh-nl pajero?

And mentioned elsewhere by fraz... he has put 9.5" gears on a 10 bolt 9" carrier and used this in a 10 bolt housing? Am i correct or did i read that wrong...

No I think you might be correct about that. The Fraz rear diff thing. It wasn't going to work for me though as I had all the ARB bits to take into account as well with the lockers.

And yes I believe all the fronts are the same. The easy way is to check the ARB locker listing - if the part numbers for the models match then the diffs will be the same.

Fraz example can be done but its not easy nor cheap as the axles are different (splines and diameter) as well as the centres

so you really need a ML complete diff and a MN complete diff in order swap out crown and pinions that are from a different housing

in doing so you also need genuine bearings which are $$$$ (only bearings available are genuine.

also the factory locking diffs have different length axles so are different again.

4wd26, when u say u need a complete mn diff, u r referring to a 10 bolt 9" diff out of an auto mn correct? My mn manual has the 12 bolt housing.

12 bolt 9.5" no problems
Crown and pinion should fit the centres with no other changes

Maybe details on what has been tried by who and known to work ie fraz with his 9.5" gears on a 10 bolt carrier...

Very handy info tho... might end up getting a set of ml 4.1s if 4.3s turn out too hard to get... i have some auto mn diffs but want the larger 9.5" 4.1s for my manual... anyone in adel got a 4.1 ml centre lying around?

My MN man had a 10 bolt 9" diff so info above is not wholly correct.
Depends on the model you got as to what diff you get

Yep it is up to you guys to research and confirm
Even ARB at one stage would not order a diff lock until the vehicle was on the hoist, vin numbers also could not CONFIRM

Oh really? That's interesting. Hmm. What size wheel and tyre package did yours come with? What MY & spec level & body type?
Mine is DC MY12 GLX with 16x7 alloys and flares...
The more info we get from as many people as possible, the better...

EDIT info in this post is incorrect

MN only
AFAIK all GLR and GLXr come wth traction control and a 9"diff
GLX with LSD have 9.5" diff
GLX with traction have 9"diff

I am sure there are exceptions to this as there were lots of changes
