So it would appear that 9 inch diffs are quite a common thing in the ford holden world and that 4.11 ratio is also quite common. question is it just a mater of sourcing a ring and pinon for a nine inch diff and then have it fitted to the carrier? and then do the same for the smaller front diff? surely mits dont build their own diffs and these parts ring and pinion are more common than just the Triton or Paj?

Just remember.......if your going to play with 9" diff stuff, ford 9" has been around a long long time and can be getting on in the age of components.
I'd hate to see some one put 30 yo diff bits in that have been up and down the quarter mile being pushed by a big block. ;)
Just some food for thought. ;)

Was more asking if I could buy a ring and pinion that would bolt straight into the current carrier/housing. Might have to go and talk to a specialist about it. I'm getting quite interested in doing this for the bigger tyres.

Quick question for those that have swapped the ratios, does $400 a diff sound like a good price?? Removing them myself
I've stumbled upon a v6 and the diffs look ok
Swapping the 3.6 for 4.3 should make a huge difference with 33's and possibly 35's

Also am I correct in saying that 35’s and 4.3 ratio will be pretty close to stock 205/R16’s and 3.6

879 – 734 = 145
145 / 734 x 100
= 19.75% increase

And ratio swap from 3.6 to 4.3

4.3 – 3.6 = 0.7
0.7 / 3.6 x 100
= 19.44%

So "fixing" the diff ratios to provide more "leverage" on the bigger tyres makes sense, however whats the effect on the CVs and rear axles?

increasing the ratio should put less strain on cvs etc however running bigger tyres will always lead to premature failure of cvs bearings and the like

Lads I was just having a look thru this thread as I'm keen on getting reduction gears. But I may be blind or just scanning past my answer on the iPhone, I have a 2012 glxr and was wondering what spline is in it? So I'm able to get some prices.

Thanks everyone :)

There's a separate thread (or two) about reduction gears specifically. Your reference to splines though makes me thing you're talking diffs. If reduction gears there's essentially only one place to get them from and the details are in those other threads.

Hi lads. I've tried to get the spreadsheet from this thread to work but every time I try to click the link it doesn't load. So basically my ML GLX has a 3.917 ratio at present and I currently have 265s on it ( standard were 205R16s or something if i remember correctly) and am looking at going to 285s and want to see which ratio I should change to to make it as close to stock as possible. Just by a guess I'd assume 4.1 as a minimum and 4.3s would be best but it would be nice to be able to see the numbers in the spreadsheet. So if I could get a copy of it or knowledgeable advice that would be awesome.

Cheers
Raz

Yeah 4wd26's server was one the way out last I heard so that would be why the links aren't working. 4.3 is the ratio for the petrol MLs as I understand it so that might be your go.

26 might chime in as he's the master of these things. Or Fraz91 who changed his ratios not long ago.

Yeah thanks for letting me know Cowboy Dave.

I have read Fraz91's build up and seen his change over. Honestly, I was a little surprised to see the difference between GLX and GLX-R model ratios with the same motor and gear box (I guess that's why they had vastly different tyre sizes from standard). It's funny though that my Triton hasn't really felt all that sluggish, but I guess I may have just gotten used to it by now. I am currently looking for some 4.3 ratios at all of the local wreckers but it seems that most of them only have 3.2 MLs and 2.5 MN diesels. I'll keep looking and see how I go. Thanks again :)

Server is back up again- not sure for how long.
will copy and store somewhere else and re hotlink- might even add a few of the newer combinations to the spreadsheet, if I can find the original copy (no luck on the home computer- must have it on the works laptop?)

Damn, looks like I missed the server. I had a look twice yesterday, once last night and again this morning and none of the times have I been able to get access. Doesn't matter though, thanks for your effort 4wd26.

Anyway I have done a couple of my own rough calculations and I don't know how accurate they are but I hope at least they are ballpark. I think by looking at the first page of this thread it looks close enough.

Basically between the standard 205 tyres and 265's it is approx. 9.5% circumference difference and between the standard 3.917 ratio and the 4.3 is approx. 9.3% so pretty close to perfect and then with 285's on it would be 13.55% circumference difference so with the 4.3 centers they would only be 4.23% off which is very acceptable (especially if I only use the 285's as a play set). Does this sound about right. And it's not worth even contemplating a 4.6 ratio from the Paj unless going to 35's I would think because with both 265's and 285's the 4.6 centers would make both sets of wheels under standard final drive ratio. Does this sound right?

Sounds about right mate, I've got a set of 4.3s waiting to go in which I worked out to bring the drive ratio back to stock on 35s (my standards are 3.6 though)

Thanks for the info Tom B. I assume the difference you'll feel in gearing between the 3.6's and the 4.3's will be quite extreme and should run your 35's quite nicely. 17% difference in gear ratios or there abouts, crazy.

Just wish I could find a set of 4.3's locally, seems that all of the ML petrol's that have ever been wrecked haven't lasted very long. Very hot commodity by the sounds of it

Edit: If anybody knows of a set of 4.3's that I could buy it'd be greatly appreciated. Cheers

A quick question please....

After reading through all the info in this thread, I understand that it's fairly easy to swap ratios from like Tritons. Eg mine is an 07 Glxr, turbo diesel, auto. My diff ratio is 4.1. Now I can swap that ratio out for a 4.3 from a petrol triton fairly easily.

I'm running 33's and would like to get my gearing back close to standard. Am I right in saying I'll need 4.6 or 4.8 ratios to achieve this? I believe these ratios are available in the Pajero but has anyone done the conversion yet??

as far as we know no one has done the pajero conversion to confirm

I may or may not have some front and rear pajero diffs here to do the conversion- just have to find time

If I can get it to work, I will let the forum know

Excellent, thanks for your reply 4wd26.

Would 4.3 ratio make much difference in drivability over my current 4.1 ratio?

the 4.3 is 4.9% lower than the 4.1's

and 33's are 11.2% bigger than the 245/65 17s stocko's

so would bring it back to almost 6% of stock gearing,

If the 4.6 Paj gears fit, they are 12.2% lower and would provide lower gearing than stock.

I personally wouldn't worry, I run 33's on 3.9 ratio's and find it still has plenty of poke with only egr blank, wastegate mod and a sprint booster

ratios on different models & the affect going bigger rubber

Postby AussieAnth on Thu Jan 09, 2014 9:21 am

Hi All

I'm about to put 265/70/16's muddies on a new set of rims for weekend play. Have decided on +30 offset on 8" wide rims.

Just read this post below from this thread, and its got me a tad worried about gear ratios.
http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=5719&start=25

Hay Saltydawg, yeah you will notice a bit of difference with them tyres. Depends on what diff ratios you have... Most of the MN's run 3.9's and handle them fine. Mine is a GLX that came with 3.6 ratios which was no good at that size with any sort of load on the back... Had to swap them down a size to 245/75/16 to make it more drivable. :(

I've got a MY13 GLX. Since most guys have GLX-R's, I'm concerned all the advice I'm getting might be skewed if most have differnet ratios to mine. and i think this poster SRB has a 2011 GLX Club cab. Would mine have 3.6 or 3.9 ratio's? Is it a GLX vs GLX-R thing, or a Dual Cab vs Club Cab thing? Or has SRB fitted different ratios after market?

Sorry for the noobie question. Still learning.....
