There aren't that many atfs that are compatible with the Mitsubishi SP3. I went with a valvoline product called dex/merc, which is compatible. I gather wholesale autos use a castrol product. Both the valvoline and castrol are synthetics. I've still been able to overheat mine so it's no silver bullet.

From memory there's a valvoline sticker on the windscreen with the WSA details on the back.

Will check my invoice to confirm.

Ok recently I sold my 09 manual ML GLXR which I loved. It was my leased company car. Got a good price too as it was spotless. I now have started a new job. Anyway.....believe it or not the supplied company car is another ML 3.2 triton but AUTO. I was pleased it was auto as I can't be assed changing gears any more. It's got 130000km and actually surprised me. As soon as I got it home I have blanked the EGR, wound up the boost to 19psi. I might get a cheap chip to just kick it up the ass a bit. It will chuck a line locker if I hold the brake which I was pleasantly surprised with. It's not terrible.

Now, the auto feels ok initially off the line but I want it to shift a bit more positively. It holds a bit long in the gears.

After reading this thread fully is there any simple mods I can do.

- Delete the cooler (no tow bar)?
- go for a different fluid? Different viscosity?

?

What size tyres are you auto lads running? I'm at the point of needing to change but I'm pretty worried about about completely buggering my fuel consumption. Sounds like it affects the auto heaps more than the manual.

I'm afraid my torque converter is broken... from standstill I need to rev it to 2000rpm before it starts rolling when I release the brakes.
Oh and something is leaking red fluid... :?

Hopefully it's just a hose or something...

Some of us have our old ones as useless spares after we got the upgraded coolers maybe that could be a better/more cost effective solution?

You guys think thats expensive...
Wait till you hear the price of a new L200 around here.
We can choose only one outfit level, Instyle (the highest), also no option in transmission.
Club Cab MT starts at AUD 59.000
Double Cab 2 seater AT is AUD 66.500
Double Cab 5 seater AT is AUD 118.600

A 2014 model with the same accesories as I currently have would cost me AUD 78.000. And then I don't have the heaters which would add even more to the price.
So uhm yeah... prices here are a bit higher.

If I have read some posts correctly. You can safely tow in 5th (auto) but change down to 4th or lower to go up hills etc.

Is the 4 speed box the same? Ok to tow in 4th and change down to 3rd or lower for hills?

By safely tow in 5th, I assume you mean auto temps??

Depends on the weight of what you are towing, anything up to a tonne (ie box trailer) I don't "usually" bother using sports shift and manually selecting gears, temps are ok. For our larger and heavier camper trailer, weighing approx 1.8T, I will only ever drive using sports shift and manually select gears. I'd usually be in 4th, even at 110km, unless I can get a long downhill section or very very flat straight road. You'll soon find out when the torque converter will lock and unlock. If I'm in 5th and feel/hear it unlock, I drop straight back to 4th.
Note- This is driving a Pajero but same auto as the GLX-R's and a 3.2L like the ML, so comparable to a Triton anyway.

Same goes when I'm towing my work trailer (1.5T) with my GLX Triton (4spd), I turn the O/D button off and let it use 3rd majority of the time, rather than being in 4th (overdrive) and building up heat.

A scan gauge or similar will soon show you the difference in temps between manually selecting the gears compared to just leaving it in Drive ;)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

If my reading of posts/threads is correct. The design of the 5 speed Auto gearbox (GLXR) is such that the "torque" won't destroy 5th gear.

My question was is the design of the 4 speed Auto (GLX) the same? Is it strong enough to safely tow in 4th?

Great! But is the design of the 4 speed GLX Auto gearbox such that it is safe to tow in 4th (overdrive)?

I have done for 40,000 kms towing kms
4 speed auto 32" tyres and a 2 tonne van, cruise set
Like alco mentions though, I watch my temps (auto and coolent) and know speeds that the torque convertor locks. I'm mindful that once it gets warm it slips easier and it begins a cycle of getting worse

I now also run s manual lockup switch for the torque convertor

BUT

If I knew what I know now, I would have went straight to diff gears, but no one wanted to be the first

So in summary, it's doable, speed dependant (lockup) but you have to watch everything, but there are things you can buy to make it easier

Or keep it factory and it all goes good on 29.5" tyres
Getting Out There
Sucks to be you, glad I bought a 3.2 :o

I would say yes, as long as it is not heating up due to being in 4th all the time with the TC locking/unlocking continually

As 26 says, lots of things you can do to make it easier and help the auto out ;)

so it looks like i might be on the right track with the sonnax valve

Cowboy Dave wrote:More details here: http://www.sonnax.com/parts/2160

coughy wrote:ok so i found out the price it is $126 retail but the guy at the counter said could do it for about the $100 mark
as he said they sell a lot of these for this g/box and it will help improve the pressure to the torque converter for a much better seal / bite internally

ok i said then i rang the local auto tranny guy and spoke to him about this valve
he said he has a 03 paj or tritty cant member but he fitted one to his own car as well
he then said that his spare parts guy had a tranny problem so fitted one to his car and yes both have said they g/box was better and felt better as well
so i asked the million dollar question HOW MUCH TO FIT???
said to do it in the next service and would cost $500-600 for service and fitment of valve
so i think it will be my next g/box fitment....
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

Sounds very interesting but how do we go if we have already fitted the larger wholesale automatics nomad valve
Still do able?
I would do anything to reduce the tranny slip and the heat this causes!
