I wonder if it's a SA build/component thing - or just the mighty V6 power was too much for the piddly 4cyl diesel designed components could handle? :P
Both at once sounds like he must have been giving it a fair hammering though!

Seriously though it would be interested to know if the component supplier is the same for the Thai and SA built cars...there does seem to be differences in both build quality and components from what I can gather from a few posts on here?

I'm not sure if the shafts are made here in South Africa or not, but I had to wait 3 weeks for my replacement part, so that is definitely not a local part. Over here the factory and the dealer network are completely separate entities. The dealer network doesn't have access to parts that are used on the production line, so even though the Tritons are being built daily in a factory 300km's away, if there are no shafts available in the dealer network, they have to order from Japan....according to my dealer, although I think it might come from Thailand.

The guy who broke both shafts, was probably hammering it very hard. He now has to wait 21 working days for his shafts, but that's the least of his worries, the engine was under water too long and water seeped in, not sucked into the air intake, water literally leaked into the engine and contaminated the oil. At least the engine repair is being done under warranty, because it not suppose to leak water into the engine.

I feel lucky after looking at these pics that my cv blew nicely ( if you can say thet ) Kept the boot intact and managed to cruise back to my joint ( only a few km's ) from where it happened, otherwise i would have had to put homer to the test and we would have lost track time...... Getting some spares now and going to be haning out with my mechanic tomorrow when we change it, if it happens again in the middle of no where, i want to be able to get out.......

You guys ROCK !

Take some pics of the install, might find some things harder with the body on the vehicle :?

very keen for some pics of the parts that broke on the cv as well, boot open would make this thread complete.

BTW I cannot remember whether it was the inside or outside that broke on the drivers side.

cheers

Interesting using a claw hammer to disassemble? (thought those were for wood work) An Engineers Ball Pein would work much better. The safety shoew were a treat.
Very good write up though.

Triton CV Joints - removal and re-assembly

Postby UAV on Tue Feb 15, 2011 8:05 pm

So tricky, you say yours wasn't a bad break and you could drive it? What would happen if you couldn't drive it, would you have to fix it on the track?
Does driving with it broken cause it more damage?

From all reports UAV the majority of the time the car is driveable - without 4wd of course.

So if you can get back out and don't have too far to go you should be able to get home...although I'm carrying to avoid the risk just in case.
Especially if going any distance.
