I have ordered a BRC double diff breather kit, my question to the more mechanically minded, am l being silly only doing the diff's or should l change this to a 4 poster and do the auto box as well? I am sorter reading through the post's that the box has a breather line already going to the firewall, is this correct?
2013 MN 4sp auto.

Advice appreciated.

Pretty sure it's the front diff that has a breather to the firewall. The auto and transfer join their breather together and that goes up into the gear stick boot.

So would that mean l would be better to run a line from rear diff, then run 2nd line from the auto / transfer, leaving the front diff as is?

Cheers

Yep. Or maybe extend the front breather a tiny bit and join into your rear one or something just so you've got it all covered and don't have to buy a 4 way manifold thing.

Has anybody had oil coming up through the rear diff breather tube on long trips?
I recently installed 6mm blue breather tubing to front, rear and gearbox ports vented to the engine bay. I am currently 3/4 through a Perth-Darwin-Perth trip and have done a few big legs (1500,900,850km etc) and it appears oil from the rear diff is being pushed up the breather tube and making a small mess in the engine bay. I have a feeling I'm to blame as a May have pushed the tube too far into the original vent (white cap non return jobby) for price of mind that if I gave some slippage I'll be ok. As all the water crossings are done with, tomorrow I'll pull the rubber plug and have a look and trim back if required.
I'm assuming the level is the height of the normal metal diff plug on the back?? And if it is Low what gear oil is reccomended.
Cheers.

what ??
you saying that u filled the diff to the breather height???
if so hell no way to high in oil
there is a plug on the back of the diff where you fill it
the oil level is 6mm under that plug level
so rule of tumb is fill till comes out the plug ..

hope that is what you where meaning there m8??

I think he was referring to the filler hole, but worried the breather hose was sucking from too far down.

No I didn't fill it to the breather height.
I trimmed the breather hose today, I had installed it too far into the housing.
I needed to know the height to fill (or litres) so that I can top up what may of been lost due to my stuff up.
Thanks, I'll add a little tomorrow

I would leave it unless you're sure you lost a lot. There was a recent service bulletin suggesting that if you fill to the filler point you'll get leakage when driving up hills. From memory the new height was more like an inch below the filler hole? Pretty sure the bulletin is somewhere on the forum

as most of the pictures in this thread are not up anymore and i couldn’t find a solid answer, could someone please confirm the following in regards to a manual ML box and transfer..

am i right in saying that the box and transfer are connected with a T etc and both vent into the rubber boot, basically meaning i would only have to run one breather line to the engine bay?

from my build thread.
"Finlay got around to fitting my diff/gearbox breather that I purchased in a group buy early in the year
I was lucky enough to have the early type of rear diff breather with the hose attached.

I removed center console to access the gearbox breather & fitted the hose using a brass fitting, I also removed the pop-up breather cover & attached a hose (secured with a clamp). I did not fit a breather to the front diff as it already has an extended hose which terminates high in the engine bay against the firewall.
I fitted the breather/filter on the RH side utilizing a bolt that normally has the wiring loom attached (it was the correct thread & size)"

"While I had the console out I took the opportunity to check on my breathers fitted earlier. I also grabbed a few pics :geek:

I removed the spring loaded breather & secured a hose with a clamp (refer pic 3) which then connected to the breather hose fitting. I have since covered the brass connector with a thick tape to stop it rattling.
The other hoses marked were connected to the small steel tube.
In all I have 3 breathers from the gearbox/transfer case. & one from the rear diff"

Hope this helps.
