Steering Shudder at Highway Speed

Postby Jiminy on Tue May 13, 2008 4:00 am

There appears to be a few posts on wheel shudder and I can't seem to find what I am experiencing with my Triton.

I have plus 1 wheel diameter increase and when the speedo hits 100km/hr, my steering wheel shakes like a sh!tting dog. I have had wheel balances and alignments for no great success.

I have a DiD auto and I wonder if anyone else has shuddering issues at highway speed. :(

Get the tyre blokes to rotate the tyres on the rims as as in deflate the tyre and bgeak the bead and rotate the tyre to a point that it doesnt egg out try that I had the same problem and thats what they did

Says in your profile you're running 22" rims? Are they the rims/tyres causing the shuddering? Have you still got the stockers to try on the car?

I suspect the 22" rims could be the problem, so I am asking if anyone else had this problem with larger diameter tyres.

As I swapped the originals for them the day I picked the Triton up I can't compare.

I like Mud16 solution, I will give that a go.

No problem here. Did they say they got them to balance ok? If so then it can't really be the wheels.

I'd go to a suspension/alignment specialist and ask them to drive it and tell you what's going on.

sounds like it might be a bigger problem unless they stuffed the balance.

I asked about the 22" wheels, because many vehicles require hub centric rings (also called a centre bore locator) on aftermarket wheels to make sure the wheel spins true with the centre of the hub... It's possible this could be your problem, and no about of balancing will make it go away if this is what's happening.

It could be worth asking your wheel installer if hubrings are required on the Triton.

hope that helps!

Maybe its just the low profile 22" tyres hitting bumps..........Not a lot of sidewall there for absorbtion purposes.
Tip # 1 - Avoid stress & grief & low resale values with vehicles - do it once - do it right, buy a HILUX!!

i had the same problem with my old car the tyres just needed to be balanced, you could also check to see if any of your weights have fallen off the rims

jiminy, I pulled a wheel off mine this morning, and they definitely appear to be hub-centred rims. If your 22"s are a "generic" type that fit a few different makes of vehicle, they should have the hub-rings fitted to help prevent the wheel being tightened up slightly off-centre which will cause the symptoms you describe.

Cheers

Subi_man, you were onto the problem with the hub rims. Finally took the truck back to get looked and yes, they forgot to fit hub rims. They have ordered them in and another trip back to get them fitted.

I have listed a couple of things below I have learnt from this experience.

1. make sure you have a key to the lock nut or lock cover.
2. Make sure your wheel brace will actually fit the nut and actually over the nut.
3. Test drive at highway speed ASAP.
4. Change spare to match new tyre diameter.

Looking forward to a nice non-shuddering steering wheel on the highway this weekend.

Good to hear you're on the track of getting it sorted mate - these tyre places should know their business, it's not up to the customer to know whether or not his new wheels are going to need hub-rings !!!

Hey Jiminy, how is the ride with the pimp rims? I like the look and may consider some down the track. I am just concious of the very rigid ride as it is now and wonder what the 22's do for it?

Thanks Subi, the bloke that I was dealing with initially was switched on, and of course he was away when I put the truck in to get the new rims.

Marty, if you are worried about ride, why did you buy a 1 tonne ute?

The ride is OK, the bride hasn't complained yet and she is a delicate flower. I imagine the ride is harder than on standard 70 series tyres, but not significantly so.

Hey Jiminy, nice looking truck. How long has the steering shudder been giving you the sh#tz. Some of the wheels that are brought into the country come as blanks, that is the PCD for the studs are not drilled. Shane 308 has just experienced the same with the new rims for his stato, massive shudder. Upon further investigation was found that the mounting points for the studs had been drilled off centre. The thing with these blank rims is that they only have to be drilled OC by mere thousanths of an inch for it to cause a problem. Food for thought.

You can also check if the tyre is going the right way most tyres have arrows on them to show the way they must roll around
