Quick question. (I hope)

I had my driver side front CV replaced on Thursday and then took the beast out bush to do some off-roading. The car didn't make it home.

My right front wheel seized up and I couldn't move the truck at all. Its being towed back to the mechanics tomorrow.

I'm wondering if the two are related and if I do have to replace the wheel bearing should I do both sides?

Well finally got to attempt the front hub unit replacement. Got all the bolts out but that sucker would not budge!

So all the bolts went back in for a fresh attack another day. :(

So do people take the knuckle off with both ball joints attached or do you break the ball joint free?

Is a 6tonne press enough to get the hub/bearing unit out of and into the knuckle?

How many kms do most get out of their front wheel bearing?

Still haven't swapped mine and heading to 230k.

I must of had bad luck with replacements. Just done both fronts again, front right on the third replacement now (one was eBay, one was Bursons and this one an Allied). Still run factory 17s and only put the ultimate lift in after the first one gave up.

I'm getting a slight mechanical noise that seems to correspond to bearings. Sound and feel OK when turning by hand.

My Vito had similar noise at around 90k and also felt OK to hand. Replacement got rid of noise.

Conclusion - will just replace them soon.

Now back to son's timing belts. What a PR*%#k of a design. The time used up just getting at it.

RHS finally done! LHS tomorrow, all going well.

Shop press is worth every cent. That bearing/hub unit was stuck fairly tight, but the press made light work of it.

What I have found is the tolerance of the disc is slightly loose on the new hub, so tolerances are a bit slack. I might have to shim it.

Did my drivers side rear in the shed at home today, the bearing and retainer are pressed onto the axle really tight. Took a bit of grinding and some heat to get it all apart then went down to the local engineering supplies to borrow their press and get it all back together.

I've now done both rears, passenger side at about 135,000 and now the drivers side at 150,000. So they each lasted a similar time. Admittedly I was lazy and didn't put a proper breather on the diff for a while so a bit of water was probably sucked into the bearings past the seals at some point.

Hopefully these last another 150,000, it's not a job I want to be doing too often. Have yet to replace a front bearing.

That's good going with the hiding you give it.
I've only got about 190k on mine and already done the rear bearing... such a pain doing them.
Oddly my fronts haven't given out yet.

Interestingly, the original front bearings showed no signs of play but there seemed to be a noise contribution.

Off the vehicle, turning the hub, you could feel distinct resistance in some spots of the rotation. Symptoms suggested that the rollers were either binding or skating in some parts.

The new bearings turned more freely and smoothly for the whole rotation.

On the vehicle, there seemed to be less noise and less vibration through the wheel.

Now just new front brakes and tyres to do....empty bank account zooming up! :(
