I really hope this is just a one off type failure. it definitely seems a strange way for it to break.

any chance of finding out when the particular lokka was made/batch number etc?

ive got one in the garage i have been holding onto for nearly a year now waiting for the right time to install it and the longer i wait the more doubt i get in my mind about it.

hopefully when you contact the manufacturers they test it out and stand by their warranty.

Yes, these are of interest, I think 4wd Systems would honour the warranty claim, and in turn Lokka themselves. They have sold lots and one failure should be seen as a defect and not a blemish on the thousands of Lokka's sold....

Does anyone know where they are manufactured ?

I did not notice any batch no. on the box mine came in.....Did not look for it either, will grab the box tomorrow as dark in the garden shed now.

Gauci, I would not be to concerned about fitting yours, if you are not doing it yourself then shop around for a specialist, and reputable diff guru. They are an easy modification, just a couple of critical clearances to watch for when assembling.

An object doesn't have to move to fatigue. It only has to have the load applied in a cyclic manner. Every time the Lokka disengages it applies and removes the load as the teeth slide over each other.

It can only go in one way, the other end of it's hole is blocked by the casting of the cage.

This looks to me like the retaining pin has come out allowing the centre pin to slide and get chopped off by the cage and/or the inside of the diff housing.

This was the failure on mine :(
The centre pin came out and severely elongated the hole in the carrier.

The installers swore blind it wasn't their fault.....just "one of those things that happen......you know......if you had patrol diffs it would be a different story etc"
Pretty obvious who's fault it was though.......

Reasonably easy fix with Fraz's 2nd hand front diff and $400 to install a 2nd time over.......got out of it reasonably ok ;)
(Although was filthy about paying for installation again.......but that made sure no one but myself will ever work on any of my cars again ;) so will save me money in the long run)

I had the same thing happen with my lock rite except all the pieces ended up chewing out my pinion gear and somehow snapped the clip on the diff axle which stuffed the splines, opposite lock swore it wasn't there fault and ended up costing me $800 and I supplied the replacement diff

Why no option for TJM air locker? They come with limited lifetime warranty. Something none of the others lockers come with.

the poll was set up in 2011, I don't believe the TJM was available for the triton then, around 2013 from memory and even then it was marketed for the pajero and wouldn't guarantee it would fit the triton.

it was a ongoing saga (waiting for it) like the e locker- actually pretty sure we are still waiting for that one......

So you'd need a second parallel poll to give the elocker etc a look in.

A9X that's a shame because there have now been a number of failures which were down to a manufacturing fault. I would have thought if OL sold it to you they'd be up for it and look back to the manufacturer to fix them up. I suppose sometimes you just have to get the vehicle back on the road so you do what you've got to do but it still sucks to see.

No, not really. ARB/TJM use a different method of air delivery for locking the diff. They also offer different warranty periods and have different costs.

the poll is obviously at a point in time where these options were not available and also it does not reflect what is available in the vehicles. Therefore there is no "front locker and Traction control only" etc.

if the poll was reset i would bet the answers would be much different just because of current ownership. plenty of those ML owners would now be gone and the newer MN owners would look at the 'traction control / no LSD' type options.

Polls are based on a point in time. things change. this was current then.

My bad for not checking the poll date. I clicked on 'new posts' and this one popped up, so assumed the poll was still relevant because it was still an open poll

Maybe a "point in time" being 2014 may be of interest to some. Time for a new poll?

If some wants to do all the typing I'm sure someone else will agree to post it. My recollection is that platinum members can start poll threads so no need to drag a mod in. Might be best to start a draft thread where people can first discuss what should go in? If you have a false start because one option got left out interest will die off pretty quick.

Am i better off getting a diff locker on the front or back diff? I have asked a couple of people i know which i should get and they ask me "which wheels do you think will get bogged?".

Now i'm thinking that since i am often towing, should i get a locker on the rear wheels since they have the most weight on them and therefore the most "drive" when the going gets tough? Is there any sense in this?

Also, are "air" lockers OK to get? Some ppl have said they are not as good (strong?) as a mechanical locker.

Air lockers are fine (I have 2). Front will get you further (and into more trouble) than rear. Rear has some other advantages like being able to be used to help keep you straight in a descent situation.

Nothing has the potential to blow up in a 'debate' as this topic.

i have OEM rear and ARB front and no issues to date with these types.

I am not sure what you mean by 'mechanical' but if you mean a lockka or lock rite or similar that automatically work i think there are none available for the rear anyway and i would not recommend one if you have super select. There has been a reasonable number of front diffs destroyed from the Lokka :? but it was considered to be a manufacturing fault of an early batch with dodgy locking pins or something like that.

it would be better if you can provide more detail.

CD is right in his comment but if you are 'towing' i would suggest a front locker 'only' may not be the best option due to stress on your CV's if dragging a lot of weight and you grip up the front with a spinning rear wheel. The front locker will get you further but a rear locker will see better mechanical reliability.

So if you can better describe what you tow and where you tow it as well as car details you might get some better answers.

2008 triton, auto.

We've done allot of sand work which includes towing a camper. Got through the Simpson without getting bogged, but found ourselves bogged on a few soft, sandy beaches. Rear drivers side tyre always seems to be the one hung up after digging a hole in the sand. got through the Simpson towing without getting bogged and done Googs track and other place with no issue,so i have some idea how to drive (tyre pressures etc).

But the few times i have been bogged its always been the right rear tyre. I accept maybe some driver error if i've dug a hole ( i try not to spin tyres). Its only happened on a couple of really soft sand beaches. Thinking a rear diff lock of some kind might help me out.

Mate has a defender with diff locks and i've seen him "crawl" his way out of some situations where i think i would have spun a tyre, and bellied out. I only see me using the diff lock if towing the camper in sand, and i can see the sand is dangerously soft. So most travel i don't see me having the diff lock activated.

If you fit a rear air locker or e locker you need to take out a LSD.

Maybe fit one to the front. Shim the LSD?

I got front locker first, then rear couple of years later. If I had to choose one I would pick the rear due to much stronger drive line. I broke my front drive shaft with a front locker. The front locker I only turn on at crucial moments and then off immediately. The rear i can turn on and leave on without worry about breaking anything.
