Headliner removal - ML

Any tricks to removing / reinstalling the headliner?

I'm wanting to replace the foam rubber with some quality sound deadner as the noise from the ceiling is significant, esp when carrying ladders.

The problem is caused by the use of the high strength steel (allowing much thinner sheets) with minimal bracing.

No real tricks. Just remove any trims securing it carefully and be sure you don't bend it. Once creased you cannot get the lines out of them.

Rhk , so what insulation are you using? is it 5mm sticky back foam what accoustic value is the insulation , i might have a look at doing mine can you post some piccys for us so we can all look at doing this, Cheers mate
as it makes sense to insulate the roof for thermal and accoustic.

Stock standard the MLs have a few sections of inch think felty stuff a bit like carpet underlay. It seems to be applied with a double sided tape. There are the obvious screws at the grab handles, coat hooks, sun visors, and then the interior lights have to come out so some screws there. I think there are also some plastic clips that pull out so be a little careful there not to mark the head liner. Plastic trim removal lever is the go there.

My only other tip would be that it is way easier if you can work on it upside down but 99% of people are going to find that pretty well impossible to manage.

Old thread but related topic. I have recently purchased an ML Olympic edition for my son and we are tidying the old girl up a bit.

The headlining looks a bit stained so can these things be cleaned up a bit? Not sure what a replacement would cost compared to a car detailers efforts.

The material is all synthetic, so normal upholstery cleaners should be fine.

A wet spot vac should do a good job, just pic a warm/ hot day so everything dries out nicely.
