Factory race pipe.

Postby GLX-R Alex on Wed Jan 25, 2012 6:02 am

My work mate recently replaced his entire exhaust system on his MN 2.5 triton so we had his standard exhaust sitting here at work. I compared it with my ML exhaust and from the cat converter back is exactly the same. So I decided to cut up the spare rear section and made a factory race pipe.

Went into work an hour early today and jigged it up on the bench so all flanges and hangers are in the factory positions. I'll try it out tonight. Should flow better than the restrictive stock muffler. You wouldn't believe the path the exhaust runs inside the muffler. It actually reduces in diameter inside it. Cost $0

very Keen to see how it goes power and sound wise Alex.
I pulled some 2.5' stainless pipe and mandrel bends out of the shed yesterday to do the same thing.

Be interesting Alex,

I have seven more factory pea shooters laying around here if you want to cut them up as well. Two more coming in latter this week.

I have always maintained the cat converter on these things are pretty good for milder tunes so cant hurt knocking the second bees hive out. Put a stinger on it,

I had a new section made to eliminate the muffler - $100, throatier under load, no discernable difference at idle, throttle response feels better... This is on a 3.2...

Well my workmate got a 3" mandrel bent system and I'm jealous. His factory exhaust was laying on the ground. I think the pipe work itself isn't that bad. So with the muffler removed its basically a completely straight through 2 1/8 exhaust.

I looked inside the stock muffler. It reduces in diameter inside and is a 3 pass flow through it.

I believe with it removed the overall flow rate will be substantially increased. I need the reduced back pressure so I can go up a tune level. 500mn isn't enough torque.

I have done exactly the same just recently.
I can definitely feel the difference when under load (ie towing)
Normal day to day driving, not much difference.............. it just sounds better, thats all

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

Nice work. Should sound pretty angry without the muffler

I was gonna do the same but something snapped in my head and I ended up with a full kit

Ok. Sounds great. Not noisy but definatly more bass sound. Idol is basically stock volume.

Power has increased sfa but I imagine the flow is better.

did this today also, and relocated exhaust. car drones a bit and sounds a bit more meatier but not as much as youd think!

it also sounds like a freaking pigeon going off (pllrlrlrlrrr) <---- pigeon noise.... after every gear change!
