Try 3M (Velcro Brand) Dual Lock, I have my remote mic fitted with that, also my 12V fridge socket in my tray and even my brake controller.

Great stuff, available in black or clear and won't come off driving on corrugated roads (so far). No holes drilled anywhere. I got mine from Whitworth Marine in Melbourne.

Still havent really mounted the handset as the double sided tape isn't strong enough and I'm still deciding on if I want to drill holes to mount the bracket. Just have it coming out from under the seat and sitting in one of the drink holders for now.

I have a small Uniden. Unit mounted inside the centre flip up storage box in the centre of the dash. (where the radio /GPS is on some models) Cover flips down so it is out of sight. Microphone is mounted next to gear lever, centre console on passenger side.
Turn it up to 11

Tx3450 fitted under dash.

Look on eBay for the seller in Perth, then PM him, rather than auction.

I got a sweet deal that way.
Head unit $320
RFI antenna & bullbar mount $50

Hi Guys,

Has anyone had any experince with the Oricom UHF200? It is a small compact unit with remote speaker/mic unit. Its only a 40 Channel, but I won't be using a UHF very often and the 80 Channel units are still fairly new and far between (and the price of a new born baby hippo).

Cheap as chips at WOW Sight and Sound $129 (No Antenna) - http://www.1wow.com.au/oricom-5w-uhf-sy ... 14872.html

Was hoping to get one for the weekend NTN meetup at Queen Mary Falls (QLD)....

Don't buy an oricomm. :-)

Just get a collection of stones and rubber bands. Write your message on a bit of bark, attach it to the rock and throw it at the person you want to talk to. This may even give you greater range than the oricomm. :-)

Get an icom, and an RFI aerial and be confident that you have the best.

Sorry, in hindsight that may have been harsh.

I guess that at $149 you can't go wrong.

Just be sure to put a good aerial on it, the aerial may well outlast the radio. :-)

I have the GME TX3100 and hate it. No adjustable squelch means my range is limited and sometimes I miss parts of a conversation. Speaker is tinny and crap.

Bought it cos it is super small and easy flip mounting...

Now im thinking:
Icom IC440N LONGREACH 80CH 5W UHF 12V/24V

Made in Japan 8-)

Has everything mounted on the Mic so I can hide the unit away which is also 8-)

Any one with any ideas or reviews on this?
Mod talk:

I clearly remember Joe stating categorically that he prefers it in the bottom
Joe:
I didn't say it was better in the bottom, I just said it was easier and quicker.

I got one a year ago to get me through until I got my new GME. Haven't replaced it as it has done a great job so far. For the money I can't fault it.
Keen to get amongst it!!

did you read the instruction book matt, :? the squelch is adjustable. ;)
I have the same one & thought for the size of it the speaker was pretty good. I do however have an ext speaker mounted under my headrest (pics in build thread) so it doesnt bother the co pilot too much

With the work that I do, I use UHF radio's on a daily basis for anywhere between 4-14 hrs per day.
I have used all the different brands out there like GME, Uniden, Oricom, Motorola, Yaesu, FDC, and ICOM.

Throughout my use of these radio's I have noticed that some work a lot better then others.

You can buy cheap and sorry to say but it is what you pay for.... Bad reception (both transmit & recieve).

Unfortunately I have lost workmates due to poor performing radio's.  and of course wankers on the road...
Personally I would be looking at the more quality product, I have had a hand held ICOM for over 5 years, dropped in water, driven over by car, dropped 10m, brush it off and it is still going strong.
Transmission after this time is still an easy 15km.....   that's right 15km.

When a UHF is possibly the only thing that can save your life I would be paying that little bit more for peace of mind...

Just my 2 cents worth :D :D

Thanks for the feedback chopper. Thing is I wont need it for work, and I dare say that the only time I would need it would be when in convoy (Max 2KM spread). Mainly just going to be used for communications when trying to navigate through a section of track. Do you think it would be okay for use here?

Thanks mate, what aerial have you matched it with? What GME are you going to be getting mate? I was going to be saving up my penny's and getting one of these in a year or so - http://www.uniden.com.au/AUSTRALIA/p_uh7760nb_index.asp

That remote uniden is a big step up from the previous model.
We've sold a few of them and the owners have all been happy.
The icom is still betterer though.

Good Choice, for short range use these radio's are pretty good, we use al lot of them at work.

Plus with a hand held as well you'll be able to get out of the vehicle and guide people if they get themselves into a sticky situation :D :D

I have a icom with the head mounted behind the dash beside the fuses & the mic has all of the controls on it, works well, but like you really only use it when in convoy going camping fishing so in hindsight I would buy th ICOM handheld & saved myself some coin...............The one who dies with the most toys wins. Get a firm aerial on a sprung base so that your passenger does not end up stabbing you with a butter knife becouse the whippy aerial drives them to distraction.

The icom ic41s 5 watt handheld is more expensive than the ic440 remote head.

How about a ~$900 Hyt 512 channel unit?

Or a $700 Hyt 16 channel damn near bulletproof version?

I thought it would help my mate more then anything when I get out and have to navigate him through something that I wasnt stupid enough to try! haha

Question for everyone, do you have your UHF on and scanning while driving around town/to and from work etc?

Nah..... to much crap on the air, sometimes it is good to find out traffic conditiond but usually someone gets on and goes of it's nut at something

Also uses too much battery, you end up havinf to cahrge it every night if you have a hand held.
