Mine is constantly on ch40 so I get the heads up from the truckies ;)

Was gonna recommend a handheld as a short term solution, work great in convoy etc and when you upgrade
, if your mate doesn't have one easy transferred to another vehicle.
I'm not so good with the advice  ... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment???

The hand held is very handy.....get it.......handy
Seriously, I bought one a while ago and it has been used every trip. Whether its just when I get out of the car to keep up to date or during recoveries or giving directions through tricky bits or lending it to someone who hasn't been bothered to get one yet ......Deanoh.......
As far as leaving in a channel when traveling.....I only do it when I don't have little ears in the car. ;) and its on channel 40.

Off topic a bit, but up here I have to turn the uhf off if the kids or missus are in the car. Ever since you could buy cheap handhelds, every F##kwit who doesn't work and lacks a life talks absolute shit to give some meaning to their pathetic, masturbation driven, meaningless lives.

In Townsville, "yogi bear" just can't shut up. Drives the truckies nuts. Members in Townsville will know exactly what I mean.

I use mine only for out of town now.

I have been playing with the hand held all afternoon. I even listened to a game of trivia this evening waiting for the GF to finish work. VHQ07 Repeater Chan 7 if anyone was interested! Did you know Silverchair where formed in Newcastle?

I think for the $140 I spent on this handheld 80 chan UHF, will serve me well... Might travel with it on chan 40 while in the car until the novelty has worn off :)

Little bit off topic but still on UHF

Thats not a bad idear, mayby a dedicated NTN ch could be the way to go in your travels....like spotto's.. in a convoy or driving through a town' you could monitor ch...whatever ;)
Thoughts..yes..no?

I like this idea. I vote Yes :) Maybe a 41-80 Channel? I haven't heard 1 person on any of these channels since I got the unit on Tuesday...

Found this site. Cheap UHF gear:

http://www.gadgetcity.com.au/

Was looking at the GME big girl. ARB sells them for $270 or $280.

This mob does them for $228 and free shipping in Aus... not bad....

Dont sell Icom but... I want the IC 440. Cant find it any cheaper than $415

Any one have any suggestions/advice regarding Uniden?

At moment tossing up between:

ICom IC 440
http://www.radioparts.com.au/ProdView.a ... +12V%2f24V

GME TX3540
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/280831714063 ... 1423.l2649

and Uniden UH7760NB
http://www.gadgetcity.com.au/uniden-uh7 ... =92_36_113

Uniden heaps cheaper... :?

Intersted in any ideas on sound quality/ unit quality/ features/longevity etc...

Think I like the Icom but never heard them in use. I want a clear sound. My base model GME sounds a little tinny and hard to understand others sometimes.... or is it me getting older :|

I have the second one your looking at.

Great unit and very happy with it, decent aerial makes a big difference ;)

Sound quality is quite good (you can hear pretty clearly in my vids) and I like the neatness of the install as my head unit is hidden under dash. Having all functions on the mic, imho, makes life a lot easier and simpler. Don't have to reach across to change channel/volume etc.

I've had mine for over a year and no issues. Would happily recommend :D

You get what you pay for with radio equipment. I use Icom because they are Mil-Spec radios and the UHFs are built from commercial radios. They are built like tanks to deal with dust, vibration and heat with big heat sinks. I remember seeing a video clip where Roothy ran over one with his truck and the radio was fine.

The others all work fine but if you want tough - go Icom. Audio is punchy and the mic feels like a rock in your hand.

nice work. Did you need to do any 'mods' to get 477?

Just added ATAS120a antenna on bullbar. But no i can't get 477. How do you mod that?

You won't get an 857d up to UHF CB.

What bands do you use the 857 for?

It is an amateur radio that is used by licensed amateurs. It is illegal to use it to transmit if you don't have a license. It will transmit AM, FM, CW and SSB across many frequencies from 1.8 to 432 MHz at 100 watts. Though it won't do UHF CB.

It is very much an entry level amateur radio - the top ones sell for over $10k. Google Yaesu FTDX 9000 or Icom 7800 and imagine trying to mount those puppies under ya dash!
