Postby ellewill on Fri Apr 13, 2012 12:40 pm

Hi there,

Anyone got plans or pics of an in tub storage box? I am looking at making on to possibly hold a 2nd battery system.

Would appreciate any info or help.

Thanks in advance.

Scotty - Funny you should ask...

I went over to Battery World at Cannon Hill this arvo and had a chat to the bloke there...

What I have now is a (... I know I'm not using all the technical terms) - but -

Under the bonnet I have a 105A/hr maintenance free - deep cycle battery. This unit is charged via a ctec unit, just using the alternator... Apparently according to the bloke at the shop - this is good for this type of battery I have ...

The aux battery is wired out to the back of the ute to a couple of ciggie style outputs, (plus one into the rear passenger area for the inverter...etc ) - I intend to put a 40A cct breaker in there soon as they are live, all the time ...

So... who finds it to be a pain in the a$$ to pack the fridge back in the car - just to go for a drive when you are camping ...

What I was thinking of doing was put a DC - DC 12V Cetec charging unit in the back of the ute connected to the first auxiliary battery.

Then have another some sort of deep cycle battery

(the bloke at the shop said a glass plate - something :? type battery)

- in a battery box (the one I looked at was pretty good - with multiple types of connections for charging etc.)

Being charged from the 12-12 V charger. Apparently these glass plate thingos type batteries can be mounted - right / left / upside down / doesn't matter ...

So, the final goal would be a fully charged deep cycle battery that when you turn up at camp to run your fridge that you can leave on-site.

I have seen a few different set-ups using Thumper boxes ... and that would work too - but I was thinking more of the charging part of it...

Keep in mind that you could do all of the above in a single unit - running the 12-12 from the crank battery I guess ...

Interested in peoples thoughts -

I did search the topic - but I bet there is a better place for this post :D - go Mods

I made a timber box which is screwed to the tub floor behind the wheel arch, roughly the same width as the arch and doesn't take up too much room. Also doubles as storage .......

In addition to my previous request.....I am looking at building and mounting a storage box between the wheel arches in the tub. If anyone has any plans or tips, it would be greatly apprecited.

First up I would fit a circut breaker to your existing system ASAP.

So I'm guessing you want to add a third battery into your system that you can charge while on the go then leave on site to power the fridge.

If you fit a CTEK D250s you should be able to charge the third battery. Just run some 6 B&S cable into the tub and connect it via an Anderson plug. It would be no different from charging a camper trailer battery.

As for the battery box, G-mac has a great setup posted in his build thread: viewtopic.php?f=51&t=9870&p=256954&hilit=+spacecase+battery+box#p256954

Seriously though - I have been collecting the bits and pieces to do the job properly ... 40 amp breaker and a switch ... plus some big fat 12v cable to go to the tub ...
