replacement key(s)

replacement key(s)

Postby koshari on Tue Feb 26, 2013 1:05 pm

recently lost a set of keys the other day on the golf course however i was very fortunate that they were found and handed into the golf club the following day and the spare got me out of trouble in the meantime..

however having had to replace keys before on a holden and later a ford i have discovered there are many ways to replace the keys, some more expensive than others,

so a few questions refering to mitsu triton keys,

i see blanks are available on ebay without the electronics inside
can you use a second hand transponder and marry it to the car in question?

otherwise what would a stealer charge to provide a replacement key?

cheers.

New Key is about $185 plus cutting and Coding, Approx $80

and no a second hand chip wont work as they can only be coded to one ECU

I lost the key to Mum's Statesman a few years back and I'm sure from memory Holden were heaps dearer than Mitsubishi for a new one. They said they would have to tow it to a dealer, cut and code a new key and keep the car half a day to make sure the coding took. I rang a locksmith who came round - told me to keep the spare in the glovebox even though it sounded strange at the time but which I have done ever since - got the car open and the serial number. He then rang a friend who worked at Holden and got the code details which he punched into his portable computer which then cut a key and coded a fob. $350 cash and on our way about half a day sooner and heaps cheaper.

We recently purchased a 2010 mazda 2 for my daughter but being 2nd hand it only came with one key. Rang around the mazda dealers and they were about the same $180 for the key + $80 forcthe code.

But one of the dealers explained the half a day to do it as they have to get a mobile guy in to cut and code the key and they need it for half a day as it could take that long for him to get there.

In the end as it was only for a back up we purchased a key from mr mnit for about $130 coded it just doesn't have the keyless entry buttons.

Does anyone know if they can replace just the plastic surround, which I broke? So transfer key and coded bit into it...

Don't open boxes using your key OK, they break...

Yes you can but there is a little immobiliser chip in the head separate to the remote door lock.
Make sure you transfer that over as well.

I "may" have done the same thing my key which ended up the same as yours, it's now super glued together  Battery is starting to go flat though, so that's about to be a whole other issue
