Lower temp thermostat changeover available?

Postby Trough Lolly on Thu Dec 12, 2013 7:14 pm

Hey all,

Is there an off the shelf lower temp thermostat available for the MN triton??

My MN has always ran a bee's dick above half temp on the dash and wouldnt mind dropping a 10-15deg lower temp one in.. anyone fiddled with this yet?

why. the engine is designed to run at a certain temperature to ensure a long service life.

Not really a good idea to lower temps too much as will shorten it service life and mess with air fuel ratios, use more fuel etc. They fine between around low 80's to mid 90's. 8-)

What actual temps are you seeing? The OEM gauge is only a guide.

I run all my gear at over 83c.

I can never figure out why people fiddle with thermostats since my EH Holden days...I've seen them taken out and cooler ones put in mostly when they are not even overheating....I think it's a misnomer that the engine will run better cooler....where in fact you are causing damage to your motor from exess wear
as a cool running motor outside oem parameters..
causes metals not to expand to their running temps were components reach there optimal size....causing excess wear and tear...

Yeah. Not to mention moisture, acid build up in the engine oil creating a sludgy, shitty mess...

I cringe when numpties say they cut the guts out a thermostat and think it's a good thing.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they do have some damned good ideas.

According to most people on here who test temps on MNs they are always over 95deg...

Its well documented on here that the mn runs about 5 to 10 degrees hotter than the ml.

Don't go by the dash board gauge... Use a scan gauge type to get a accurate measurement. ;-)

From new my mn used to run a bit hot... in the high 90's and even up to 108 going up long hill. :-?
After much discussion and research on here I replaced my thermostat with a new one, replaced coolant and bleed air from the cooling system. Now it run as it should.
82-88 degrees most of the time and never gets above 98 even when trudging through sand dunes on 46 degree days.

I do notice sometimes that it runs a bit too cool... Usually at night if cruising for long periods at say 70kph... Sits around 77 degrees. :?
