how to replace fan belt on ML petrol

Postby myself62 on Wed Jun 11, 2014 3:51 pm

I have a squeaky fan belt from cold start which is getting worst, only had it put in earlier this year.
Will have a genuine one put in but was thinking. Is it easy to do myself?
Have searched but found nothing on replacing for the petrol v6.
Has anyone else had a faulty new belt?
Bruno.

Tighten it up. That is usually the issue with a squealing cold belt

I have had my mechanic check it.
It is self tightening, he had a look and said the tightener was ok.
The belt seems to have a slight wobble in it.
I am getting him to change it but would still like to know how to change one if I need to do it.

Can of belt grip?
Otherwise you need to wind off the tensioner. Some of the pulleys also have arse about threads. Don't go too hard on them till you know which way loosens the bolts.

If it's a self-tensioning belt then you'll need a decent spanner to release the tensioner (usually a 14mm on mitsu's). Find the easiest pulley to slip the belt off (usually an idler pulley without any teeth or ribbing) and allow room for the spanner to swing back past where it originally sat so it doesn't catch your fingers between the spanner and the block. ;)

Getting the new one on is just the reverse process. Can take a little trial and error depending on where you're removing the belt from, and an extra set of hands to get caught never goes astray.
