Didnt one of our overseas mates do something similiar but still had the slider element to it?

That's the ducks nuts, brilliant. Looks like it could perform a slider function, or wouldn't be hard to adapt.

The downside is the loss of protection to the body panels from crap getting flicked or sprayed up from the road.

Saw plenty of these when I was in Canada a few weeks back, I was stunned. Cool idea for general use steps but definitely wouldn't get them for anything other than a shopping cart.

Mmmmm. Frieghtliner Argosy's have a retractable step and have a horrible fault of not retracting occasionally. Thing is, you don't notice it until you hear a crunching noise when you drive off. :o

I'm sure that our powers the be would make it illegal in this nanny country of ours. They'll have some reason for fining you for sure.

Maybe you are thinking of Valerio's side step / slider mod, much more functional IMHO and easily maintained.
