Low range 1st gear - MN Auto 5spd

Postby asha31 on Wed Mar 15, 2017 11:35 am

Hi guys just after anyone's thoughts; I've been in the high country for the week getting chased by these Dargo fires the last few days and I've noticed something that hasn't occurred before a couple of steep climbs where only 1st low range would cut it. I would get say 3/4 of the way up a climb and found myself in first with my "foot to the floor" and actually losing momentum and revs scarily dropping. I was carrying a bit of weight and the particular track I was climbing was by far not the steepest hill I've climbed, it was like it I was all out of power. Can this happen? I had really low tire pressures and definitely wasn't losing traction. Interested in your thoughts Regards

No, traction control was turned off when this happened. EGR blanked and ECU remapped/dyno tuned/exhaust

no smells or other fuel related issues, just seemed to be low on power on that one particular steep climb that was pretty scary with the foot to the floor, never had that experience before with no more power "up my sleeve"

I had something similar trying to climb the blue mountains.. I had my bike trailer and 2 bikes on it.. i would have thought my triton would have more power..

So interested in what other ppl say.

I have had times were my auto has locked in gear and I have had to put it in neutral then into drive to sort it out.

If you had it locked in Low Range 1st gear the torque converter will lock up too, as it's supposed to.

Despite the belief that these things develop torque like a truck engine, they don't, and you need some revs to get things happening. If, as you say, you were loaded heavy and on a steep section, it's quite possible that you simply ran out of revs. With an auto, just knock it back into Drive which will unlock the torque converter allowing rpm to rise a bit, then flick back into 1st low, keeping your foot on the accelerator to keep the revs up.

On a manual you'd slip the clutch a bit - anything to avoid a stall. Remember that Mitsubishis come with the silly 1.9 low range reduction so you'll likely have to move a bit quicker than some other makes with deeper reduction.

Thank now for the 5th that explains something that happened to me going down a hill not long back.. was a little disappointed with the speed I was still going down a hill... especially compared to my cousins hi lux. (Slightly modified) you could get out of his and walk around it it was that slow.... Obviously we didn't do that.. but we could have

You should try a Land Rover. Not unusual to see drivers walking beside the vehicle watching tyre placement on steep uphills.

Ok great, I was locked across into 1st, I never thought to flick it to Drive then back over. it was a fairly critical moment when the revs started to fade, good tip, would a reduction gear set help?? The guy I was with in a new manual Hilux (old Shape) was in first and it just roared up the hill.

my ML can lose it on my steep driveway if I don't approach with enough revs, they do need some revs especially with a load to lift up the hill or towing. Yes the 1.9 is a bit tall for a LL for moving a load up a difficult track.
