If you had it locked in Low Range 1st gear the torque converter will lock up too, as it's supposed to.
Despite the belief that these things develop torque like a truck engine, they don't, and you need some revs to get things happening. If, as you say, you were loaded heavy and on a steep section, it's quite possible that you simply ran out of revs. With an auto, just knock it back into Drive which will unlock the torque converter allowing rpm to rise a bit, then flick back into 1st low, keeping your foot on the accelerator to keep the revs up.
On a manual you'd slip the clutch a bit - anything to avoid a stall. Remember that Mitsubishis come with the silly 1.9 low range reduction so you'll likely have to move a bit quicker than some other makes with deeper reduction.
