Where to mount a UHF CB

Where to mount a UHF CB

Postby Racer on Thu Mar 26, 2009 3:03 pm

After flicking through the extinguisher topic, I thought that it helped with where to mount mine. So why not start a thread on ideas for mounting your UHF CB sharing it with others. I have mounted my GME TX3420 as below with the unit under the drivers seat.

we already have a thread somewhere racer 8-) I will find it for you.

I have my Uniden UH015SX in the same location as yours, but I put the body under the steering column so at least I have a few inches more of freeboard than under the seat if I ever get water in the cab ;)

Just bought a tx4320 combo from Prestige Comms. Installed the face in the space just behind the gear shifter and just in front of the hand brake. Fits well and is out of the way. I like it there as it's not taking up any of the storage slots. I guard mounted the aerial that came with the combo.

The main unit is tucked away in the gap towards the front of the centre console under the dash. Like others, I took the power from the cigarette lighter in the centre console.

I got GME 3440 mounted under console in front of gearstick.
cable for handset comes around from passenger side .
its the handset with all the gear, and remote mounted unit.
handset bracket is screwed to ash tray.
I found this to be the best method to mount UHF. No ugly unit mounted on dash!!

I purchased a GME TX3100 from the 4X4 show

http://www.aielectronics.name/tx3100.html

very small compact full power unit.

Am waiting on my new ARB bar so I have somewhere to mount the antenna... 3 week wait :(

I had a Uniden UH 089 from the old car & even that was too big to fit neatly in the Tri.

These new GME units are small & light enough to velcro to the roof if you wanted to.

Measures 100mm x 90mm x 25mm (fits in the palm of your hand)

Well worth a look.

I have just been given a GME TX3220 for free and am wondering if anyone has mounted one in a Triton and where you did it, I am not sure that it is going to go in anywhere, any suggestions ?

I installed an Icom ic400pro last night. I spent 3 weeks driving my new Triton around before deciding on where to fit. It does not have a remote head and therefore the only place to fit the radio is on the side of the gear shift floor console. Just make sure it does not obstruct the glove box when you open it.

As for getting through the firewall with coax and power cables, I found a small 2cm x 1cm square grommet in the top left corner of the fire wall (i.e driver's side). It pulls straight out and gives access above the accelerator peddle. You can then feed the wires over the steering column and across to the passenger side.

I ran thick power cable in and left plenty of surplus to power other 12v equipment as needed. ;)

I've taken pics and will try and post them shortly.

Mate if you bought the MN you prob won't fit it cos the rear window switch has been moved to that spot. If you bought the ML you'll be fine ... (if you got the MN, my Shed shows where I had to stick my GME to make it fit)

EDIT - just saw MN GLXRs comment on the icom too, probably in a similar spot. I used a different grommet - the large one between the battery and the glove box, if you shove something down there it pops out in the passenger side cavity to the left of the footwell, that you get to by removing the plastic bash guard thingy - then feed it all back behind the glovebox (which swings down when you squeeze the side lugs inwards - there's a thread on here somewhere)

PPS if mounting between the passenger seat and centre console, test the best possie cos the seat belt hasp thingy will bump it when moved too far forward (it slides a long way forward and back)

I have just updated my shed photos.

Now includes my CB mounting

Seems to be OK mounted on passenger side console.

No complaints from the co-pilot. ;)

Although i am a little late, and bad with getting my point across. there is a photo in my shed Its a GME 3420
i installed the Display face near the ASC and mirror switches are. purely because i dont like pulling the dash apart. its close to the Gromit (Spelling)/bung and there is a nice amount of room behind for mounting and cabling.
The receiver is installed under the Drivers seat. the cable run was a bit short to run down the centre console so it is under the door trim, a few spots along there are able to be pushed down fairly easy so it wont harm the cable.
First comment i got when i showed my girlfriend was "$100 you'll knock it out with your knee as you get in"
Granted its close but its not a bad spot, ive had a few drivers and no one has had trouble.
when i pull my finger out ill mount the hand piece higher up near the A/C vent or on the door, havent decided yet

I've been really slow with my photo as well. It's in my shed.

As I've mentioned, I like the head unit here as it's using dead space and not taking up any storage pockets.

i mounted one of these in the small tray thats part of the RV display housing,

simply drilled a 20mm hole in the bottom for the pl259 and power connector to connect through .

onlt hangs out about 30mm which is enough so the speaker is only half blocked.

Sorry for the late reply Brenze, nah mate they are not angled...I remember when fitting them I used a shifter on the top plate twisting it a bit..they aren't a 100% upright..who cares...

I am spoilt by the mobile antenna...driving the same places in the Mrs car gives me the shits as she drops out all the time...

Has anyone done a roof style mount?

I'm looking at a GME TX3510S to put just behind the sunglasses holder (or even replace the holder but my sunnies fit up there) just trying to get an idea on how it looks before convincing the misses to let me put it there then find out it looks horried.

http://www.gme.net.au/products/radio-co ... os/TX3510S

I also have an electric brake set up in the car inline with my left leg (PITA but I didnt fit it) so
I cant fit the UHF there.

Ooohhh man, now I have to ask.......

Where did you get the console from and how much?

I was hoping to just have a small slit to fit it.... That looks MUCH neater.
