Tech article - Add an ipod input cable to the stock headunit

well well well the GLX wins again

so this weekend finally saw me get an ipod touch and thus i needed to install the cable to conect it all up.
what i found is that on a glx head unit it already has a cable 200mm long cable hard wired with a female 3.5mm connection for your ipod wrapped up with tape behind the unit. So all this lucky GLX owner had to do was purchase a 6 dollar extension cable from jaycar and a "female flush mount plug thingy" (same as homer has on his dash) for $2.40 and bamm i have a aux point next to my center console 12v plug  :D :D :D :D
COME ON FULL NOISE!!!!

hey subi_man
thanks mate! got the cable today and installed. took a bit longer than expected to install but that would be my stuborness in not wanting to read the instructions that came with the cable first! (Or sometimes just a guy thing) "Step B - Release the Lock on the connector housing..." Der no wonder it wouldn't work!!!
Thanks again mate! Best $27 i ever spent!

Good Post Subi Man. One other way - more expensive though - is to buy one of these for $79 inc postage:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MITSUBISHI-T ... 45fb1a5c76
I bought one, and it works perfectly, and charges your i-pod/phone as well as playing via your stereo. It comes with two U clips to take the fascia off your stereo, and some reasonable instructions. Just plugs into your factor loom. I like not having to have a seperate cable for charging, and it beats the hell out of the radio transmitter I used for years prior with dodgy shieliding and static.

Today I got in touch with arncliff Mitsubishi and they will have the cable early next week cost $35 can't wait to bang it in. I took the head unit out the cables are very short so it will take a bit of effort but should be easy enough. :D

Fitted it up today and it works. However the dock connector started to melt it must have a bad power lead so I unplugged the power from the head unit so it works well but won't charge now. I didn't need it to charge my iphone so not worried just glad to have the beats working. :P

Fitted yesterday, 5 minute job - did not have to remove the plastic surround - cables were long enough. Routed out through Ash tray as temporary measure, again, great idea.

$35-$45 from jb hi fi or any apple retailer including their online store! Can get either a plug converter or the cable style.
Don't buy the eBay cheapies as they will only charge the phone not play music.

Went to put a cable in the back of the head unit and found that there were three wires already in the plug just like
what subi_man had done to his unit with his cable.

I then pulled out the glove box and behind it as well, good look top, bottom, both sides bot nothing there. Also checked the centre console and underneath it as well thinking it could have been pushed under the mat like the accessory socket was but no cables there either that matched the 3 in the head unit!

Any body have any ideas where the cables could have been put?

Cheers

no not there.

I am wondering if I have to remove the console up by the gear levers to see if it is rolled up there and not run through to the rnd of the console

My work MN has a female socket hooked up to it, was initially wrapped in foam tape by the look of it under the stereo.
I'm not so good with the advice  ... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment???

Not under the stereo. Followed the wires in the loom to where it disappears out of sight up top under the dash. Pulled up the centre dash (Damn those lugs near the gear levers). Couldn't find them at all. Will look at removing the wires from the rear of the stereo and get one of those cables and place them into the plug.

On a side found wires under the dash next to the cigarette lighter under the stereo on a blank plate that goes to the rear blower for the 7 seater rear fan, those will come in handy I think. 8-)

Packed up the female plug unit from jaycar today for 2.40. Ordered cable from Mitsi dealer for 35.90

Would stump for the eBay cable that includes charging but none of the links work.

Any tips for running it to the centre console? I'd like the plug near the 12v outlet.

Maybe I can poke it through without removing/breaking much plastic.
