I bought two of these:

Took it apart and got it cut at the locksmith for about $20. Swapped over the immobiliser bits as per the included intructions and hey presto!

Battery is heaps easy to replace. Remove screw and crack open with finger nails.. inside module has battery number on it, jump on fleabay get 5 for 10 bucks. Crack open inside module and replace.. just a normal button battery.. could even change it the same time as your smoke alarm batteries (in your house) if you are concerned. . Fob does not require reprogramming

Have got my flip key from ebay cut and switched.. for the person worried about the immobilizer running out of battery, the 'chip' is actually different to the battery powered remote locking module and doesnt run on battery. Just a rectangle piece of what resembles a magnet. When you open the key up you can see it lodged in case

Been doing a bit of searching re if a secondhand ML key can be reprogrammed to another car as was thinking I could buy
a new blank off ebay and an old key from the wreckers put the transponder into the new blank get it cut and programmed
and all would be sweet.

Will this work or do you have to have a new transponder ..... :? :?

No idea mate. I would have thought the little chip was unique to the vehicle but that is probably wrong, otherwise what would the dealer be programming? Unless they recode the ecu to match the chip?

Unless you want it to have the wireless central lock/unlock you can just get a copy made.

You want the buttons that is about $250 available and programmable only by your nearest mits dealer. :geek:

There are some locksmiths who can supply, cut, copy and program these keys, however it is very specialist work and most locksmiths (me included) don't work on cars anymore as the process for copying keys, or creating keys when keys are lost, are unique and require specialist equipment and knowledge.
Even models of the same year can have different key enrolment methods, and dealers aren't always aware of this, they tend to learn by trial and error sometimes

Some dealers and locksmiths, will use these specialist automotive locksmiths to cut and program keys for them

So, if you do need extra keys cut, it may be worth calling around to find an automotive locksmith, a good one should be able to come to you and do the job all in one trip

indeed it is,

The original battery BTW is a CR1616 however the housing will also fit the slightly fatter CR1620 (both 3V batterys with same diameter) if you have one on hand,

pays to buy these batterys before they go flat as stapler stated thay are dirt cheap on ebay >$2 for a strip of 5. where as the local shops charge more than that that for a single!

Bugger, I had a plan to get a key cut as an emergency key without the electrics so it wouldn't get damaged and then tie it under the vehicle somewhere as a "just in case". So just to clarify, this wouldn't work with the immobiliser? So what happens if you are outback and the batteries fail on your key?

I have a non elec key cut. Use it trips to the beach (fraser). Lock the real keys in the glovebox, lock the car. Wack the blank key in my pocket and go swimming. Dont need to worry bout getting the blank key wet and dont need to worry about someone thinking to check the toe of my shoes then flogging the car! Cant start the car with it but dont need to in this situation.

brilliant mate exactly the info i was looking for, my mate has a plastic key with his commodore and i was looking around to see if mitsi do them but think ill just rip off your idea!!

I have my spare (electric key) in a magnetic box and hidden where only I can get it. This way if I lose my original I can still access my ignition as normal.
Obviously I'm not telling you where I have hidden it :D
