Spare Key & Battery Replacement

Spare Key & Battery Replacement

Postby Trilo on Thu Oct 22, 2009 6:22 pm

Hi all
When I bought my Triton the previous owner had lost a set of keys, :x so I have only the one key, I went to to stealers to ask about another key, they told me to get cut and reprogrammed would cost over $400.00 :o . Does anyone know if there is someone cheaper out there ?
Thanks

Did the dealer charge you for the programming and was it a blank key all in one (same as the original)or you had to get a key separate with a separate the auto button type?

Hi ya Trilo hope things worked out a bit cheaper for ya. I had the same problem when I bought mine from Western Plains Auto Dubbo (Mitsu dealers) in July and they charged me around $90.00 for a blank with remote head then gave me an order number to take to the locksmith to cut it, once that was done I took the key & the ute back to them & they programed it for me, all up $90.00 , about 5km & 1/2 hour running around, so all in all a good deal I thought. :D

Hi Drover
Yeah got it all sorted cheapest blank I could get was $135.00,in here in Sydney, $7.50 cut and $30.00 program from another Stealer whilst I was down in Wollongong. Not as cheap as yours  but it was the best price I could get :) .

Spare key!

Postby maxtriton on Thu May 26, 2011 8:21 pm

I know it's in the house somewhere but cant find it!!! Upcoming trip so need to get another made, locksmith's reckon they can cut a Key to open the doors but can't program the transponder to deactivate the immobiliser. Has anyone had one replaced from Mitsubishi..... if so how much did it set you back?? Cheers.

Some interesting reading >HERE< max. A couple of years old and referring to Magnas, but the info should still be relevant.

Look for keys on eBay. Bought one for around $80. Apparently can be coded by Mitsu for around $30, when I asked. Never got around to it, but wanted a spare key ;)

I'm not sure if its the same, but replacement keys for my HSV are around $140 incld cut key, remote button, and program which i get done at a local shopping center key cutter shop which i've seen at other shopping centers, they also display the mitsu, ford, mazda logo so i'm pretty sure they will do our trucks.

Bugger, I had a plan to get a key cut as an emergency key without the electrics so it wouldn't get damaged and then tie it under the vehicle somewhere as a "just in case". So just to clarify, this wouldn't work with the immobiliser? So what happens if you are outback and the batteries fail on your key?
Cheers,

I have a non elec key cut. Use it trips to the beach (fraser). Lock the real keys in the glovebox, lock the car. Wack the blank key in my pocket and go swimming. Dont need to worry bout getting the blank key wet and dont need to worry about someone thinking to check the toe of my shoes then flogging the car! Cant start the car with it but dont need to in this situation.

I usually lock my key in the tray and take the hard lid key with me when I go sailing; and if I lose it worst case you can always reef the cover open.

The whole spare/replacement key saga is another dealer ripoff. I even doubt that these keys (genuine part) need "programming". If they use the VIN number and possibly an associated ECU code, the key would be duplicate of the original as per production line. I can't see someone sitting on a production line individually setting each key up as the vehicle goes down the conveyor.

Another idea, if your worried about losing keys at the beach is to have a small combo locked safe bolted to you car in a suitable place where you can leave your keys, wallet, etc. Glovebox is probably the last place I'd leave anything.

Thanks for all those great ideas. I am still abit shocked that the electric key is the only way to disable the immobiliser though. What happens when the battery in your key dies? Will you still be able to start the car or are you stuck?

Re: Spare Key & Battery Replacement

Josh

I think the battery is only used to operate the remote. The detection of a valid key operates on similar technology to the anti theft devices like they use in shops (ie. ECU sends a pulse to the key's chip and waits for a valid serial number). Note a number of cars come with a spare that doesn't have remote but still starts the car.
