Bash plate mounting brackets

I certainly dont think the original mounting brackets are strong enough........not for off road driving. First hit and they snap off

I made some up using Buzzy's design (and a bit of overkill for good measure  ) and welded everywhere i could possibly get too :D Havent had a problem since 8-)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything important, it's too late to stop reading it.

Silly question but do the electrics need to be disconnected prior to welding?

better to ask a silly question than make a silly mistake ;)

bout to get the bottom of my mounts welding Is there any risk of weakening where they are mounted.

I wasn't going to weld its as I'm no welder.... I was going to take it to someone to MIG weld along the bottom.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldnt they be designed to be the weak point. I know many people have welded new mounts etc. mayb I'm overthinking it.

Thanks

I'm more inclined to think that the mounts were only designed for the flimsy factory plates. Heavier duty plates will transfer more shock yo the mounts so beefing them up is not a bad idea. That said, I managed to get by by just rewelding the factory mounts on both the Tritons and the Pajero, extending the welds all the way around. One, which has a captive nut that's come loose may require some work in the future, but the mount itself is holding for now. I have had to re-tap threads in a few and go to M10 in a couple.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Having a read through it seems like it was inevitable, but I've broken a bash plate mount.

Can anyone recommend a place in the northern suburbs of Melbourne to do the repair work and reinforce the existing mounts?

Apparently bolt on replacements work well.

I just took it to the guy who fabbed my charge pipes. I will get a pic over the weekend when its raining.

Disconnect your battery before welding.

Anyone know what might have been in this image? I've just noticed one of my bash plate mounts is broken and I'm hoping I can do something DIY without welding.

Thanks mate. I was hoping it was some clever idea that avoided welding or drilling the chassis, oh well.

Was this ever answered? I now need to replace mine and have the gear to make them up and weld on myself.
Is it just the negative cable that needs to be removed or is it better to remove both?

Lifting the battery negative seems pointless, as there are numerous spots where various devices have their own negative wire to the body and chassis.

I would lift both wires from the battery, give it about 15mins, check there's no residual voltage and clamp the negative & positive leads together. This should prevent any induced voltages across electronics.

At the welding site, I would put an earth clamp either side of where I'm welding. This should guarantee that no stray currents nick off across bearings, etc.

If you're really fussy, make sure the vehicle is insulated from a hoist or jacks so no electrical paths can be caused back to the grid earth.

From what I've read over the years, it seems that some people would hook up the earth clamp somewhere on a vehicle and start their welding. Later, wheel bearings would fail (micro arcing) and possible electrical faults appear. Unwittingly, they caused return paths through these things.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!
