Closing the EGR Valve *check first post for links*

Hi all

A quick random question. I recently purchased the SPVi EGR Module Mk3.1 plug and play. from tony at SPV industries. For some reason I thought that it was going to be a module that plugged into the EGR valve, hoever found out when i got it that is plgs into the MAF sensor.

Now i understand that the MAF sensor measures the amount of air flow going into the engine, which then provides information to the ECU for fuel control, Correct ?

What i though the module i got from tony would do is to shut off my EGR valve, therefore preventing carbon build up. What i do not quite uinderstand is how this module does this when it is plugged into the MAF sensor.

Can someone clarify for me how Tonys module works? and what exactly it does?? (very happy with my purchase just want to know the ins and outs hahaha)

DISCLAIMER - I have very BASIC knowledge of engines  so the answer to this is probably very obvious.

Cheers

Have a read through the preceding posts. Probably just the last few pages would be enough.

It tricks the engine into thinking the ambient temperature is below zero therefore the engine management closes the EGR

Egr blank questions I couldn't find

Postby rohan1993 on Tue Mar 31, 2015 5:50 pm

I'm about to blank off my egr
It's a 3.2l
Obviously my car is out of warrenty
It has 170'000 kms and is 07
So that being not a concern, what am 8 up for

I see you can drill a hole in the throttle butterfly, or run a separate pipe from the cooler to the intake somewhere
What's the most reliable or easiest way to stop the cel coming on, and if it comes on will I need a scan tool to remove it? I have one of those Bluetooth obd2 readers for android

What else am I up against, cos I'm thinking block it at the exhaust, drill hole in butterfly and anything else I should be aware of short of reading the 402849264 pages on the main post? Thanks

All of that is old tech, rohan993. Just read the last few pages of this thread.

By now your manifold should be well carboned up. Get it cleaned and then install the SPV plug'n'play mod. Takes all of 30 seconds to do and you'll never have to worry about it again.

dont do it, no need anymore, better solution available.

initially you will be up for about a thousand bucks worth of work to pull the manifolds off and have them cleaned and refitted because if your truck is throwing codes (map pressure codes that is) the manifold is already blocked. alternatively you can do it yourself if you have the tools/skill/patience and a spare weekend. there is a great downloadable guide to cleanign the manifolds with lots of pics.

definitely not any of these.

What's the most reliable or easiest way to stop the cel coming on,

again firstly you will likely need the have the manifolds cleaned before you can apply the preventative solution.
and if it comes on will I need a scan tool to remove it?

yes you will

I have one of those Bluetooth obd2 readers for android

get free "torque" software and you can read and clear CELs

What else am I up against, cos I'm thinking block it at the exhaust, drill hole in butterfly and anything else I should be aware of short of reading the 402849264 pages on the main post? Thanks

just look for the section regarding the resistor in the maf circuit. this is where the preventative solution is documented.

Ok this is ridiculous.. I actually can't find anything *facepalm* this tapatalk app is terrible and I have no pc

Is it possible that someone knows what page the resistor mod is on? I can't find anything but chitter chatter

Thanks :)

I'm not afraid to tackle a soldering iron, isn't tonys mod which I can't find for love nor money in here only $50
Or even if I knew what resistor to out where I can do it myself haha

There is mention of you in that thread, are you aware if the trials were successful? I'm having a really hard time understanding this forum, I look for answers and found so far alot of whinging, chitter chatter and out of 100 pages find 1 half decent answer

Apparently you had a fix?

I linked the easiest and best way. After a lot of reading that is it.

I linked you to a second hand "Tony Mod" $35 posted I have one. I plan on taking it out for the plug and play version.

The best thread on the DIY version IMHO is in the Challenger section of a well know Victorian Pajero forum. A resistor of 6.8 is too much YMMV

mate this is the biggest can of worms on this forum,

in a nutshell if you are comfortable and posses the electrical aptitude do it yourself,

if your a desk jockey with no friends with electrical aptitude pay the man for the fool proof ( almost ) $150 kit,

Cheers.. I'll buy a resistor and do it tomorrow... not afraid to tackle a project having alot of mechanical experience and knowledge
Just concerned about it causing any other dramas

there is a table i posted a while ago regarding values, basically the bigger the value when wired in series with the map the more it pushes the ambient temp value out for which the ERG wont operate.

a smaller value will mean you will get occasional operation of the EGR.

a static value bypassing the MAf sensor all together is another option,

at the end of the day we are hardly splitting the atom here.

I'd rather the egr not operate at all so I'll just use the 6.8

All I know is that is the best thread I have read on installing a resistor to a Challenger or Triton.

It explains quite well how to pick a resister value.

Threads on here are lacking and confusing.

I am past caring what people do. Knock yourself out on 6.8 not for me. YMMV

Fyi i had a new maf sensor fitted the other week and i had to adjust the value to stop the egr from working. i did not have it fitted when it went to the dealer

the best read is the actual 3.2l workshop manual, its written by Denso and mitsu , it has a graph with the resistance versus temp plot of the thermistor. and a detailed explanation of the operation along with the wiring diagram opf the maf.
