I just dropped the oil out of my box and was full of metal shavings.

Put in some Fuchs MP80 and the box feels brand new.

Think I will be dropping it every 15km as the box has been replaced twice now.

I had my 45k service- MMAL change the gearbox oil for the first time and waddayakno- no 3rd gear anymore?????????????????????????????????????
MMAL are now repairing a 3rd gear syncro, it is currently under the knife this week (so I'm carless again!) havent heard yet so see what they find in the box!!
I'll question the oil used to refill and take it from there.

If it all works again- i'll consider trading for HILUX and be done.

There have been issues with 'luxs as well.

well i took mine in today for the lack of 2nd gear when cold and notchy feeling along with squeeky rear springs. They fiited the silencer kit for the springs so all good there.

They changed the oil as this is the 1st step in diagnosis apparently. It does feel a bit better but havent had it cold yet so will see in the morning, however they did say if it doesnt get better then mitsi said that there is a modified clutch for this problem as it is "known". I reckon i will be getting it soon lol

Just shows that there may be more than oil at fault here guys so pay attention to your gearbox and how it feels, if in doubt just take it back in.

Also got the transfer case drain plug. was $10.65 He did say would do a group buy discount at $8.80, but by the time I post them out to you it will prob be the same and we are only talking 2 bucks anyway

45k service yesterday and in the week prior 3rd gear was a problem downshifting. Well now , even double clutching does not work. Only way to get to 3rd is to go via 2nd (without releasing the clutch). I'll give it another day or so to see if the new oil works it's magic otherwise think I have a 3rd gear synchro issue. Can someone add new reliable sweet shifting box to the list of wants in the new triton 2014??

so just before i went to fraser last week, maybe a week and a half before that, i also started to have issues with third gear downshifting. mine has done 35 000. it started out being only 30% of downshifts wouldnt go in, now its up to more like 80%. i will be taking it back the to the dealer next week.

boy did it make it frustrating in the sand cruzing along in 4th then hit some soft stuff, oh wait lets lose all momentum going from 4th to 2nd to 3rd to find its below the boost range now so back to second again :P

 Yep well- just hung up the phone from MMAL stealer...

The box has been opened and the synro was replaced, box put back together and still didnt work!!
NOW it needs a roller hub????? as it has worn thin due to cheap chinese steel ( newer model MN have a hardened steel hub internals so- dont worry guys)

I possibly wont get my MN back till monday arvo now!!!- 6 days by then.
Surely it would be more cost effective to just put an newer model gear box in the MN rather than out sourcing a transmission repairer to do little bits at a time????
it would only be a 1 day tasking for an apprentice service technician- as they're not classed as mechanics anymore.

Oh well, they offered my a loan lancer for a day free of charge, but cant do that as i'll need to put a ton of tools in it- Just another excuse for a days surfing on monday i guess!!!

HILUX you are looking better (auto one mind you)...

Cheers guys, just be ready for a weeks loss of your truck if it goes under the knife for G/Box work.

Knotty.

Like Steve said, good luck with the hilux.

If you think it would be more cost effective to replace the box rather than repair the existing you are deadest kidding yourself.

If I were you I would be happy that they are outsourcing to a gearbox specialist to make sure it is fixed properly.

As a side note- pretty sure a 1st year apprentice would not be able to do that type of work unsupervised anyway, and would you want a ute back that had a gearbox installed by a 1st year apprentice.

Toyota gearbox's are Aisin as well  You can actually use a few of the same parts internally between both Mitsi and yota :o

But of course toyota is far superior because it costs more

Dropping the original slop and filling with a quality fully synthetic oil as soon as possible would probably extend the life of these gearboxes and save a lot of hassles.

Penrite Pro Gear 75w-85 GL-4
The same in 75w-90 GL-5/6 works well in mine.

Redline MT-90 75w-90 GL-4

Perhaps Pentosin MTF-2 75w-80 GL-4 from new? Standard brew for BMW and highly regarded.

Yeah I know HILUX isnt that special, I just had lots of little time taking issues with my MN...

I think most dual cabs made in Thailand are done in the same mega factory!!

I'll keep the truck and see from here.

good luck to anyone that has this gearbox drama- it sucks with no third gear! :|

Yeah good oil will definitely extend the life however we shouldn't expect it to solve a mechanical issue if you have one that is. I think there is something wrong with these boxes and only time will tell hey

I understand how knotty feels. It's the strain of fighting for warranty and waiting. I have to deal with one of those mega dealerships with every brand and combined workshop and tight margins who appear to not like warranty work.

Early on in this thread, it was said that the gearbox took 3.4lt of oil, I have just done mine and it only took a little over 2.5lt, its parked on flat ground .... is the late model box in the 4x2 smaller than what was spoken about earlier in the thread. I just want to double check, Thanks Rick

Doesn't it have the capacities listed in the owners handbook thing?

I always end up checking the oil capacity about 3 times per oil change. Bit of a nervous mechanic

So..have the boxes changed going from ML to MN?

I used all the recommended Nulon oils through the drive train ( at 130+km now) and the box
changes just like a small Jap car - light and easy. Touch would it stays that way.

Hey guys.
I see a lot of people talking about penrite sin 75-85 oil for gearboxes. Has the name changed. All I can see on penrites site is pro gear fully synthetic. Is this the one people are using?
