As indicated (by the red circle)... That is where the 2 shafts colapse "into" each other in the event of a head on collision... If the glue has failed on this shaft, it could perhaps create "play" on your steering... ???

Here was the problem!!!!!!.............but its o.k now :) :)

Somehow I missed this.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the way this whole system works is to save your life in the event of a major collision by allowing the column to collapse rather than spear you through the chest.

I think I'd be very reluctant to try Stefanos' method. No doubt it stops the rattle but that much epoxy is the difference between life and death. If it's rattling then nothing more than a few small drops of silicone sealant, that will stop the rattle but shear through easily, would be a much safer route to take.

I Definatly would not go with the epoxy, but talking to mits today there is a hotline fix where they glue the column, I assume the same as stefanos minus the epoxy

Yeah I think Mitsubishi was using some sort of resin, hopefully that sticks well enough but will shear when it needs to.

Theres a hotline fix for this. very similiar to stefanos method minus the epoxy. You apply glue to the joint and then you need to heat the glue with a heat gun. If your tritons still under warranty or if you have owned and serviced the car since new mitzys should fix it. If not you should still be able to get the glue from the parts desk. I would highly recommend getting the glue from mitsubishi.safety first people. Remember you need to take the steering wheel off to do this which means airbag, clock spring etc. you should disconnect your battery so make sure youve got your radio code.

So did Sikaflex or silastic work to stop the rattle in the end?

I've just had a chat to my local dealer about my steering column rattle and they confirmed that the hotfix mentioned above would be applicable in my situation. They said that they'd need the car for a day and that they apply the glue, heat it and let it set. So far so good...

Now the bit that has me a little sketchy - they'd just done the 120K service and overcharged me $115 (as I supplied the oil) so when I asked for a price to fix the steering column the lady hesitated for a while, then said it would normally be $420-ish but they could take the $115 off making it $305. That sounds a little steep to apply a little bit of glue which I can do myself, so I asked if I could purchase the glue from the $115 and they could refund the rest - she hesitated again and said they couldn't sell me the glue... she was very vague and finally said it came in a container that wasn't single-serve (i.e. that it was a large container made for multiple vehicles).

I might be a little paranoid, but this doesn't sound right to me... I've bought this Triton at 40,000kms from a dealer in the same franchise and it's been exclusively serviced by them...

Has anyone else that's had this fix applied by Mitsi had to pay this? Should I just hit them up for the full refund and go for a walk down to Repco?

Are you out of warranty mate? That would have been my first approach, it's a known problem with the vehicle for which they've issued a hotline fix as I understand it.

No CD, no warranty :( I might go for a drive in today and got them up for a 'good faith' job though, they've got enough of my money over the last few years...

Got to see the mitsi hotfix doc today (couldn't get a copy or photo tho :( ) and there's no part number or descent description for the glue. There is a photo, but it's of a generic glue that's red in colour... no label. The service manager said they normally use loctite from the local repco - when I asked repco they came out with "loctite super glue extra gel" but said they've used one in the 600 range (620?) before as well.

x2 for 5th's recommendation of just a few drops of silicone sealant jooce.....! ;) It'll stop the 'rattles' but, it'll still easily 'shear' under front-on -impact- conditions, requiring -either- the 'life-saving' collapse of your vehicle's steering column -OR- -you- exiting from this -mortal coil- courtesy, of a 'sharp' steering column, speared through your gutz.....! :o
