265 is the width of the tyre, in mm. The height is expressed as a percentage of the width. So a 265/70 has a height (sidewall) of 186mm which is 70% of the width.

Tyre sizing in inches e.g. 31" refers to the overall diameter of the tyre. So, a 265/75R16 has an overall diameter of 804mm which is 31.6". Close enough to 32".

Wish I had your knowledge! So technical I could find something even the muddy's with a larger circumference and get a 31.9 or 32.6?.. If that's possible? I'm just spewing out gibberish! Haha, all I want now are my new shoes :) thanks boys! Can always count on you!

It's entirely up to you mate.

265/65 keeps you legal, 265/70 doesn't but the odds of ever getting picked for it are very slim.

Hi all

I have been researching tyres lately and i have been getting some differing opinions from the tyre blokes round Canberra.

The 3 brands i have narrowed down to are

BFG ATs
Hankook Dynapro ATM
Dick Depek Trail Country of FC11

Just wondering what peoples opinions on these tyres are??

I am looking for a tyre that will give me good traction off road so i can start pushing my 4x4 trips a little but ultimately i use my truck as a daily drive (90% road use 10% offroad), but when i do go off road i do want to push my truck a bit more.

looking to hear from people who have owned the above and want their opinions on
mileage
wet road grip
offroad grip
Value for money.

Cheers

mate... i know your've narrowed it down to those 3 but i would strongly suggest either the bridgestone d697 or the maxis AT 980, particularly the maxis.
if you go BFG's I suggest the KO2s.
IMHO the hankook is probably the tyre for you out of those 3 above.

hi mate... I run bfg at's 265 70 17 and I rate them very highly on all points you have mentioned and in fact can't fault them at all...I've had various tyres over the years and these are the best I've had, I've done 25k on them so far with very minimal wear " not noticeable " and from reports from other people when I was researching before buying was told they should get 90k - 100k out of them, I'm inclined to think that will be true from what I've seen thus far. they are expensive but you get what you pay for in this case.
let us know which way you go mate.. cheers

I run the Hankook Dynapro ATMs at 265 65 17. I have found them to be a great tyre so far. I have done around 50k on them and may get another 10-15k out of them. They perform well off road. I have found them to be quite grippy on gravel. They are quiet on road also. Sidewalls are a touch soft and I have had some rubber peel off after hitting some rocks but in all honesty, I hit the rock fairly hard  .

I rate them and recommend them but I will try another brand after these are ready to replace as I like to mix it up a bit. Thinking Falken Wildpeaks in a 265 70 17.

Thanks for the input guys

Iam still a little way off getting new shoes, but when i do i shall look into the Bridge stones mIwoo.

Anyone have experience with the Dick Cepeks??
From what i have researched they have pretty heavy duty side wall construction. Plus they are 50-100 bucks cheaper than any other tyre i have looked at. If they can match the mileage of the others they may be my choice

Post moved.

No, it shouldn't require a wheel alignment but it's not a bad idea, for peace of mind.

According to the last 2 mobs that have done my wheel alignments both reckon that many vehicles comes misaligned from factory. So $50 for piece of mind- yeah, I'd do it!

Hi all

As mentioned above looking into new shoes. Have been looking at a set of steel Sunraysia rims to put the new rubber on. I am getting a little confused about dimensions of the sunraysias that will match my stock 16 inch alloys. I know that the stockies are 16 inch 6 stud rims, but have no idea the width or offset. could someone tell me what spec sunraysia rims will match my stock alloys ??

Cheers

Standard MN are 16x7 +38 offset. PCD 6x139.7.
You might need a hubcentric ring with those steel wheels.

A good tyre shop should know this and be able to advise you.

all correct except i think you will find MN stock alloys are 7.5" wide.

ML alloys were 7"

Hi all, not sure if this is the correct place to put this but i have a tyre choice question.
I have a new GLX-R with the standard Bridgestone HT 265 65 R17. Im looking at swapping them out for some bigger AT'S for touring. Im looking at either the Duelers AT or the BF Goodridge AT's. I dont much like the look of the standard HT's and how small they look in the arch, whats a good middle ground in terms of performance, looks and a size that wont take a huge toll on the fuel consumption? In reality ill be only doing a couple of trips a year with the majority of use still being black top
Thanks for any advice

I thought the standard was 245/65 rather than 265/65?

265/65 is what I run and is also the highest you can go in NSW and remain legal. I reckon it's a good size. 265/70/17 is also not bad but ever so slightly over the legal size.

The bridgestone D697 is a good AT for on road performance. I run the D694 which is the previous model and a few of the guys have recently switched to the 697 and rate them just as highly.

265/70 will give you a bit more height without the fuel use penalty that comes with the 265/75s. That said, I stayed with the 265/65s on the Paj and I'm more than happy with that decision.

Bridgestone D697s would be my choice. Perfect for that kind of mix.

Any idea what i could expect in terms of change over price if i swap the HT for AT? Current HT have 1000km on them. Curious as to whether im better off holding on to them as spares

You won't get much for the old ones. People sell them on ebay or facebook. Some tyre places will give you a trade in but it won't be a whole lot.
