holding steel wheel in place under tray/tub

Need something to get you rolling?

holding steel wheel in place under tray/tub

Postby myself62 on Wed Oct 22, 2014 3:16 pm

I want to put my spare steel wheel under my tray where the factory spare sits but the hole in the steel wheel is to large for existing the metal bracket to hold it.
Has anyone made up or bought something to rectify this problem?
Sorry if its been discussed before, didn't find anything in search.

A few people have had a flat round plate made up. Its diameter is bigger than the hole in the steelie and it has a hole in the centre the same as a stock rim.

I seem to recall others reporting that the wheel lifter off an mk is bigger and fits easily in place of the newer ones on our tritons.

I have alloys with a bigger centre hole. I was able to buy an alloy wheel spacer which effectively did the same job as the plate described above.

The spacers I got were a bit like this one, most auto parts places seem to have something similar

I'm running a MK spare wheel carrier.
It's identical to the ML/MN one, except it suits the larger wheel centre.
5 min job to swap over.......2 bolts.

Should be plenty around at wreckers.

Can you still use it for the standard spare rim?
or do you have to put the original back in if reverting to the original spare?

TBH I've never tried but I doubt it would fit.
I've got the same size M/Ts and A/Ts which makes it easier and run a steal rim with an old M/T as a full time spare.

I am for my use. My rims also have their own alloy spacer to match the proper hub size so the load is sort of shared. Steel wheels will be heavier and I don't know how big the hole is for yours. If you search wheel spacer on ebay you should find some that are much more solid than mine.

My spare wheel came free from under the tub on Friday night doing 110 on the freeway. Luckilly id didnt connect with any cars travelling behind me and after a u turn and a bit of searching i was able to find the wheel in some waist high grass about 40m off the highway. When I put it back under the tub the following day it fell off again when i shut the back door after putting the winder away. Anyone else hear of this happening?

Are you using a stock rim or something with a larger centre bore hole? It shouldn't be coming off unless you're doing something wrong.

myself62, did you end up sorting this out? i can show you what i did for mine. I just welded two lengths of angle steel to the existing mount, works a treat.

I bought a set of wheel spacers like the one Cowboy Dave has pictured above, but they arrived late so didn't use them on my outing with my muddies on, so will have to wait until I have the muddies (with steel rims) on again to see if its works.
Or if I get time next weekend might try it on. But probably couldn't be bothered until i need to.
