wider tyres on standard steels - ML 4x2

Need something to get you rolling?

wider tyres on standard steels - ML 4x2

Looks like I'll be needing new tyres before I upgrade the wheels,

On the factory steel, what are my options of a wider tyre?

Cheers

I think with the 2.5 engine you have a 2wd?
steelies from that vehicle standard 6" wide
tyres are 205?

so I believe you can go to 235 or maybe 245 but you need to check individual tyres as to their recommended rim width as this can sometimes vary

Ok so I've been left to digest what was written above and it's sprung up more questions.

Bearing in mind I know nothing about tyre sizes/widths etc,

So the 235's, can they come off the 6 inch factory rim to an alloy rim when I get them?

Are all the steels on later model tritons 6 inches wide?

Because if some came with 7 inch steels, then I could find a second hand set on the cheap and then I'd have a better choice of tyre?

I'm just thinking long term here...

Thanks again

Have a look at the first post in this thread:

http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=8337

It looks like all the steelies were 6 inches if I read that correctly.

Our 2010 MN started life with the steelies. When the OEM rubber wore, we ended up with Maxxis 771's 225/70/16 on them. Mate had a GLX+ with alloy's and OEM 245/70/16's ... sitting side by side one day, I noticed ours looked wider. Grabbed a tape measure and check. Yep, the Maxxis with their more straight, square, sidewall had more tread on road than his ...

So, don't just go by the tyre dimensions if you're chasing width ;)

Don't suppose you took a photo destorman?

If I had wider tyres next change, and they looked fatter because of the narrower rim, I wouldn't bother upgrading my wheels for a fair bit...

The dude that comes from bridgestone that does the truck tyres in our yard said to expect to pay from 300 bucks but no more than 400 for a second hand set of rims.

Funny thing is that when baby is old enough for wifey to go back to work, she brings home more than my truck driver wage and then I could get whatever wheels I want!

If you want a set. It is worth looking at a few Triton Facebook pages. In other states they just about give them away for the cost of good tyres. Hence people sell them for that in Perth. As I said I saw a good set given away recently in Perth.

Hey all, I found some three week old mn wheels and tyres from a friend of a friend, I've done a search and looks like these will fit onto my ml no problems.

One thing I'm not sure about is if I need new wheel nuts? Will the fitters that chuck this guy's new flashy wheels on fit new nuts too?

What sizing would this tyre be? Can't seem to make it out in the photo

Cheers again

If your wheels were steel then you will need new wheel nuts

Those tyres would be 245/70/16 or something very similar

Shouldn't need flares with that combination but it could be close, bit of garden edging if too bad but I believe most get away with it, or source factory flares

If the seller is putting new alloys on his car there is a good chance they will come with their own nuts (mine did) in which case you should be able to score them along with the rims.
