Rear wheel outside edge tyre wear

Need something to get you rolling?

Rear wheel outside edge tyre wear

Postby Danos on Wed Mar 23, 2016 7:30 pm

Hey guys

I've noticed the outside edge of my rear tyres on an MN dual cab are wearing very quickly.

Stock standard tyres, alloy 16" rims and suspension. Always running 36 PSI. The tyres were only recently rotated from the front. When the tyres get dusty you can clearly see the fresh wear after a short period of bitumen road.

I read on a previous post it might be shock related?

Very hesitant to put my new AT tyres on until it's rectified.

Any suggestions on how to find the problem?

Cheers

The problem is more likely to be at the front, unless your rear axle is bent (possible but unlikely), so would have started before you did the rotation.

Have the front wheel alignment checked.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

as chris has stated it would of all was been there before the rotation of the tyre
wearing on the out side like you discribe is the wheels toeing in to much and needs a wheel alignment done
it has to much toe in which makes the car drive straight in simple terms so get a good wheely done and you will be fine
oh ps these tritons dont have rear toe in or out ajustments so it isnt now it is the before you rotated ;)

When I say recently rotated it was more than 5k ago. There is no uneven wear on the front tyres and it's very clear the rear tyres are freshly wearing.

Does that still fit within your explanation above?

yes no ajustnent on the rear of these cars m8 sorry
is it on both sides??
which im asuming is the answer you are going to give me then yes it was done by the front out of ajustment
if on the other hand if only 1 side then still could be from front but you might have a bit of diff walking going on and would need the rear susp and diff looked at pronto as i have a m8s rear end keeps on walking after a while these are known for it apparently says the mech it is the 3 time he has had it reset next time they going to chuck it in the suspension shop window and say fix it or money back

I would be checking the alignment of the rear diff.
have you hit anything on t he rear lately.
A few quick measurements on some reference points on the chassis in relation to the rear diff should tell you pretty quick.
I cant see how the front being out of alignment would affect the rear unless it was massively out.
you would definitely know if it was that far out.

Ok thanks, it gives me a few things to investigate. I'll take the measurements and talk to Mitsubishi and also the local tyre places and see what they can tell me.

A tyre joint should be able to quickly check if the rear wheels are true.

If your rear suspension bushes are shot like mine and you're doing lots of roundabouts, that may be the cause.

How long were the three on the front before they were rotated.
Chances are they have worn unevenly due to wheel alignment issues and you've only noticed now since they are on the back and wearing flat.

The dust/dirt will highlight the worn spot when you drive on flat smooth surface as there isn't as much pressure on the road on that part of the tyre.

I'd say it's nothing to worry about and this is the exact reason we should rotate our tyres.

I spoke to a tyre shop and he suggested the wear was due to running the tyres in the front position. Once uneven wear starts it tends to accelerate more than otherwise. He suggested running higher pressures (up to 45 PSI) to wear the centers before putting new tyres on.

Rear axle was pretty square (about 5mm difference).

Thanks for your inputs.

Once a tyre has started to wear the tyre will always sit on that surface even if you adjust camber or toe in correct it. The tyre side wall will always flex before the tyre surface contacting the road will. As the previous posted re 45psi suggested, that should help to increase the remaining life of the tyre but will accelerate the centre surface wear and on the tyre on the opposite side if you inflate that one to match.
