Could someone take me for a drive on 33's (Melbourne)

Need something to get you rolling?

Could someone take me for a drive on 33's (Melbourne)

Postby Dan13 on Fri Jul 08, 2016 8:44 am

Hi All

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to take me for a quick drive in an MN running 33's?
I'm getting close to finally upgrading but I do quite a bit of driving around for work and I also tow a boat, so I don't want performance to be badly affected by increasing tire size.

Cheers

It also depends on the brand of tyre you get. I had a ute pass me on the highway yesterday with obviously muddies on and it was soooooo loud. Ridiculously loud actually.

My muddies are no louder than the highway terrains I used to have. Worth considering.

Good point. I will more than likely go for an all terrain for that very reason.

Can I ask why you would want to go to 33's if it isn't for muddies?

In pretty much all situations I would consider 33's inferior other than hard core off road and you'd want mt's for that I'd imagine?

If you're going from your std 31's you will notice a significant difference...and not the good kind...

Booooooo.

How dare you say he shouldn't get 33's.
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

I doubt 33s are best choice for those conditions unless you change diff gears too.

...because they look cool :D It'd be the only reason I would go bigger.... haha

Edit: just re-read. Response was for going to 33's....not the muddies bit

Maybe a little explanation of some of the previous comments would be in order.

From his profile pic you can see that Homer runs bigger and wider tyres than standard. Not 33s but getting there. So, a measure of experience there.

Naff does run 33s on the Jaffa, so his comment is personal experience

Snowman? Meh, who cares. :P Nah, he's not against them anyway.

To address Dan's question, yes 33s will definitely impact both performance and fuel economy. How much depends on vehicle and driving habits but in my own case 32" muddies turned the car into a slug and worsened fuel consumption by 10-15% against 31" ATs. In the Pajero I've stayed with the standard size for both muddies and ATs and certainly I'm much happier with that.

The 33s look great, filling up the wheel arches and giving the car some lift. But offroad, by the time you deflate to improve traction you don't really gain that much. A diff lock will give you much more traction ability and won't be cop bait either.

We do already have a fairly extensive thread on 33s, so if this turns into a repeat of that I'll merge the threads.

Dan, I'm sure that someone in Melbourne will volunteer and you'll be able to discuss pros and cons at the same time.

Might be worth asking if anyone has a spare set of play tyres you could try out on your truck so you can compare apples with apples.

That could be the solution, set of 33's & wheels for play and standard size HT's or AT's for during the week.
