Legal Wheels QLD - dreams crushed

Postby Spence on Wed Jul 04, 2018 5:21 pm

Hi All,

Im in the middle of finalising a purchase on an ML GLX-R 2009, I had a set of 16s lined up with some 235/85R16 tyres but old mate at KTAS knocked me back when we got there as they would stuff the roadworthy. Apparently they are more than 50mm bigger than the stock tyre and not only do they fail the roadworthy but they also void my insurance.

I went in on the 235/85s after reading a bunch of posts here (and I had managed to scheme a mad price of $690 for 4x Kumho AT51). Now devo, I am switching back to stock rims with Kumho KL61 245/65R17 to get the Roadworthy and the steelies can sit and wait for something more agressive

Is everyone here just taking their chances and driving around on non-legal rims? also welcome any feedback on the KL61

Not so much rims but tyre size is the issue ... to answer your question, yes.

Ml would have 16 by 7 inch rims, from memory. I run 265/75/R16 ... with a 50mm lift.
Never argue with an idiot ... they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience ...

265/70/16 or 265/65/17 would be a legal tyre size if 245/70/16 245/65/17 fitted as stock.

Cheers and yes, I should have said tyres or maybe overall tyre height would have been even more accurate

I run 265/75 R16 and a 50mm lift which keeps me under the Victorian limits.

I,m running 285/75r16 on alloys. Diameter increase over stock is about 70-80mm. Having just got back from Fraser, I'm happy with my choice. I have kept the stock wheels and tyres just in case I have a problem. Usually if you drive sensibly you will stay under the radar. But I am thinking about having them engineered for insurance purposes. Not sure how QLD regs are with that sort of thing. If your keen it could be an option.

hi there
nice wheels but you might have problems letting down the tyres to 20 to 18 psi for off roading

Rim offset needs to be within 25mm of standard (double check for NSW) ie +13 too +38
285 width is legal
tyres need to be within body so if out then yes flares are needed.
