Wheel Sanding Help

Postby JaseM on Wed Mar 23, 2022 11:18 am

Hi there,

Had a few scratches on my wheels that I wanted to tidy up. I blame my OCD. I followed a Youtube that suggested 500 Grit sandpaper, followed by 1000 then 2000, with a spray bottle of water.

Thought I'd be cautious and I started with 1200 grit and this happened:

What have I done? Is there a way to fix it and restore to the original alloy?

Cheers,

The wheels are painted. You've sanded through the paint to the primer underneath.

Painted wheels are much cheaper to make than wheels that are cast and then machined. The paint (primer) hides any flaws in the casting.

To fix they'll need to be repainted.

Ever noticed that real tradesmen don't get their qualifications from Youtube?

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?
