285/70R17's - Anyone running these

Postby NitroGLXRin on Thu Sep 09, 2010 6:14 am

Have done a search but all that came up was 265/70R17's.

So is anyone running 285/70R17's????? If so what did you do for them to fit, is just a 2"lift enough?

Second Choice will be 265/70R17, I have seen one person (Fnordy i think) that said he ran these on stock suspension for a day before a lift. Is there anyone out there running these constantly on stock suspension, if so is there any rubbing issues even when off road and suspension compresses all the way?

Also, FYI on the tyre / legal / insurance debate; Sure they will be illegal in QLD not debateing that, but was onto the insurance company and they said there is nothing relating to tyres in the policy, only mag's. Basically he said if they are fitting on the standard rim then shouldnt be any isssues, but he suggested to ring up and get the tyres put on the policy if I was still worried about it. So i might do this just before purchase - Step 2 is getting around the lease companys conditions

285/75R16's are bad enough to fit the 17's would be worse!!

You have the benifit of 7.5" wide rims- so that makes fitting 285 wide tyres "legal" as far as tyre fitment goes- gives you all the choices in this width. (only MTZ in 285/75/16 are listed to fit on 7" wide rims)

Cannot comment on the rest.

These are the same size as 285/75/16 or 33's - plenty of people running them. Search 285* ;)

I run 285's/70/17 on my 07 triton, 2 inch ultimate suspension lift and don't scrub, do wonders off road.

only issue is getting the spare back under the tray is a nightmare. had to take my toe bar off.

I just had 285 70 17s BF Goodrich's put on today.
I only have a 35mm front strut spacer and 50mm rear extended shackles

The installer ordered both 285 and 265 for me so we had a plan b if needed
The 285s fitted though so the 265s are now on their way back to the supplier (excellent customer service)

This is on a MN by the way with the Stock rims

Too be honest I never really took much notice of the economy before had so I dont have anything to compare it with. With the I drive, I'm never going to have good fuel economy even if I had bicycle tires on it.

I am still so happy with their service. The owner even drove me back to work so I didn't have to arrange for a lift from their workshop!! I can highly recommend Shamrock Tyres in Jolimont if you live in WA!!

Note: I have just discovered the slightest of rubs on the sway bars when at full lock. Ive just ordered a set of 6mm 6 stud wheel spacers which will give me enough space to get around this. To be on the safe side I have also ordered a set of wheel nuts with a long shank to ensure counter act the 6mm of stud thread sacrificed on the stock wheel nuts.

Does it fit on standard ML rims without scrubbing Coady? Or are you using steelies with differnet offset?

I was planning very soon to up grade my 245/65/17
To the 265/70/17 but now have found myself looking at the 285's... Probably
No reason other than im a guy
And bigger
Is better but any added clearance especially on the back end is definitely a plus. Would be keen to hear people's opinions now they have driven on them a bit

Im running 265/70/17 CooperStmaxx ,it has killed the ute on hills when normal highway driving and struggles more when taking off on steep inclines, clutch burn when towing my camper, very happy with ware and ride but 285 would make it worse I guess, best I can get is 11.8 normal highway driving, they where no worries for clearance on stock suspension(now have a lift)

Im running 285s. Agree with Dunga. I wouldn't get them if I was towing a lot. They do reduce power in most circumstances and I can't get under 11.6L/100km. They do affect gearing. But the clearance trade off was worth it all imo. I just need to pick descent lines better, pulling out into traffic better, etc etc. Also, the right mods to breaks are needed to counteract negative effects on braking

yeah rim size makes abit of difference as far as i can tell 832mm tall with the 17" rims and 806mm on the 16"s so might not work out so well...also wheels with the differnt off set would also make a difference

265/70/17 is almost on par with 285/70/16's both being around 31.7" tyre...
