Also if you're asking a question about legality it's best if you mention which state you're from as that makes a difference.

Ah shit. I was looking at the avatar and there was nothing over there. And I had spilled onto the second page by then so I didn't go back to re-read. Also I'm very tired and feeling dumb this week. And my internet was mis-behaving and my PC crashed twice. Is that enough excuses? All true as it happens. Way past my bedtime now too.

I'm running the D697 in 255/65/17 which is the same diameter, just 10mm wider.

This is a pretty interesting thread, as these are my size tyres. It's pretty hard to find something good. I thought about getting bighorns as they're similar to the old wrangler mtr tread but we use these for work & the wall don't seem that good. I just want a good muddy with minimal punctures when I'm in pulled mulga type country.

The bighorns are an outstanding tyre imo :?

What do you mean the wall don't seem good :?

I'm on my second set, got 80k out of the 1st set and currently at almost 60k on my second. These tyres have seen everything from rocks, mud, sand, corrugations and whatever else you can think of and to this day never had a puncture/sidewall damage. I run at 36 psi on road and as low as 10 psi when out 4wdriving.

Don't hesitate as you will be impressed ;)

I rate the bighorns (764) as well. do everything off road with ease and compare pretty well on road with the D697's I'm running.

Haro- which bighorns are you running? 762 or the newer 764?

I can only go by experience with work vehicles in regards to the Bighorns. Off road (no road at all) we have staked the sides a few times in stick country. I used the old wrangler mtr's when I had my cruiser & never had 1 flat tyre between 2 sets. That was before I settled down & started looking after my vehicles, so they went through some pretty ordinary country too.
In saying all that, maybe I've been lucky with the wranglers & unlucky with the bighorns.

The Kevlar reinforced sides on the mtrs could have been a factor too.

I am curious as i like the Bridgestone D697 AT 265/65/17 , My rims are 7 inch wide

The guy at Bridgestone said they will fit ?

so can someone chime in Please :)

This is NZ but about the only thing I found. Look at the SUV section

Also be aware what is legal might still not be a good idea. I run 235 85/R16 on 16x7 Triton rims. The result is the rim is rather exposed so bit of a rim killer combination.

Hi Ent,

thanks for your reply, That is a bummer cause the popular and cheapest size is 265 /65 / 17 :(

They'll fit mate. Homer runs 275 in the same tyre on the 7 inch rim. He also drives around at 12 psi on the beach without shredding tyres so they'll cop it okay.

I've run 265/70/17 tyres on a 7 " rims for the whole 8 years of ownership
no problems and the diameter you have nominated is smaller and legal- CD runs those exact tyres, but his GLX-r has 7.5" rims

not that it matters when 265 wide ;)

Hang on. Tyre to rim ratio is a factor of profile and tyre width to rim. The higher the profile the narrower the rim can be, also generally the wider the range of rim. Ultra low profile tyres have a very narrow rim width range.

It is ok to run the taller 70 profile on the 7" rim but not the lower 65 profile.

Now often on forums people are happy to bend the rules, and I have been known to do that on the VSB 14 ESC stupidity but putting a tyre outside the rim range is playing with fire. Each tyre size a manufacturer gives an optimum rim width but also gives a range. You might be able to convince a tyre fitter to do this but I have more respect for ones that refuse point blank to do this.

Honestly, some rules should not be bent, and tyre to rim ratio is one that I believe should not be bent. Sets of rims are cheap and plentiful for the Triton's so Gumtree is your friend.

they have a guide book and a manufactures book of approved tyre sizes and rim widths

we can only guess- but I have had opportunities in the past to view

the Australian guidelines (I have never found a copy online)

what I meant by make your own decision is that sometimes the tyre shops won't do something even though the literature says they can- because they are ......wits

sort of like numpty dealer networks ;)

ask for the information, make an informed decision, don't listen to a wrench monkey trying to sell you something with an agender
