glxrboy,

can you please edit your title to be model specific eg. Kumho KL78 Road Venture feedback etc, would be a good title.

this will help for future searches if everyone thought about their topic titles first.

here is a thread with vid you may like to read to get some further tips:

You will note that this is also in my signature which is pretty plentiful around the forum.

Random tyre questions

Postby Cowboy Dave on Thu May 05, 2011 9:10 pm

Okay so now we have a tyre index of sorts, and a wheel bible, we're hoping we can keep the Tyres & Wheels area under control.

In the past new threads about tyres and in particular tyre sizes (eg will my arse look big with 285/65/16s on?) have been a prominent source of irritation.

The intention behind this thread is that if you have a random question about tyres you ask it in this thread rather than starting a new thread all of your own. Members are strongly encouraged to visit the index thread linked to above first - many questions and answers have already been done to death.

Good answers in this thread will be added to the index to make finding them later easier (if I keep on top of it anyway).

New threads about tyres & wheels that don't warrant new threads will be moved into this thread to keep things tidy. Unless of course they are so annoying that they warrant being moderated out of existence.

As with the other technical threads this will be a carefully moderated thread, with an emphasis on providing useful answers to questions posted and keeping chat and off topic banter to a minimum.

265/75/16 Muddies on GLR 16'

Postby Trough Lolly on Tue May 24, 2011 8:05 pm

Hey guys,
Picking up my new GLR next week, and really really want to put a set of 265/75/16 muddies on the stock alloys.

Has anyone fitted this size tyre?? Id like to know if it will rub the inner guards at full-lock on steering???
Also aware of the 54mm height increase, but Im willing to risk it.

So far im looking at either the Mickey Tompson MTZ's or the Goodyear Duratrac's.

the width is only 20mm wider, so 10mm each side wider than stock, but when full locked, the tread will be 54mm higher, therefore 27mm closer to the inner-guard + the 10mm extra width from going 245 to 265.

Id mainly like to hear from people who have TRIED this, not so much the nay-sayers. :geek:
Looking forward to the feedback guys, very very keen to get this rig decked out asap. Thanks!

At what stage would side wall damage be a throw away option
I found a nick / slash in one of my maxxis bighorns about 10 to 15 mm long and about 3 mm deep no ply is showing (still plenty of tread left)
Hope to be able to use as a spare
What are your thoughts ?

did you get insurance when you purchased tyres?

I always pay the extra $5/corner that covers all damage that rights-off a tyre

includes sidewall

if so, leave it on for sunday & it might get worse ;)

if not, use it as a spare

Random tyre questions

Postby motoz on Wed May 25, 2011 9:02 am

Great work on putting that together Dave.

It was a great read and brilliant reference point. There was a lot posted on 285/75 x 16 fitted to ML's though I couldn't find and reference to MN's.

Has this been done by any members on here?

The reason I ask in my STD Glx r 17" H/T's are almost done and I have a set of MT ATZ 4 Ribs:

LT285/75R16 8ply 122N 7.5-9"rim 833mm

There mounted on Pro Comp 16 x 8 Part Number: 8101-6883
16x8, 6 on 5.5 Bolt Pattern
Backspace = 4.5in.
Hub Centric = No
Offset = 0mm

The question is will this work with no lift? Its just a short term plan for mostly city driving and unsealed road use until the mods are installed. I plan to install a 2" suspension kit but only after barwork, canopy and other mods have been fitted so I can get the spring rate to suit based on the final vehicle weight.

I'm not sure the H/T's will last till this is complete yet don't really want to buy another set of tires.

What comes first the chicken or the egg...

:?

I reckon you'll rub yourself raw without a lift and the 0 offset tyres mate....may not even be able to turn the wheels past 3/4 lock?

You will certainly have to cut into your mud flap/inner guard.

It will look VERY tough though  8-)

While it is wearing your muddies away on the bitumen :(

CLICKY THIS thread also has a little bit of the same questions/info you are looking for...

I know that any increase above 15mm is illegal in qld but has anyone heard anything about people getting the 'unroadworthy' tag for bigger rubbers eg 265/75/r16 during the registration renewal safety inspection? ?
There's a 'wheels and tyres' inspection check and I'm wondering if they compare it to the tyre placard to decide whether to put a pass or fail. Or is it just a tread depth and wear rate check? :?
Search didn't spew out many results... :(

Hi guys,
Im very new to the forum, and to tritons for that matter.
Ive had my mn glx for 4 months now.
I bought new and had the dealer fit 245/75/16 cooper stt's (m/t) to sunraysra rims. Ive done 10,000km and have had constant troubles including pulling left and bad 'wobbles' over 80km/h. I've had countless balances and rotations with varied success, the rims seem to spin true and alignment readings spot on.
Its even baffling the tyre people I'm hassling to find an answer. I've put the stockies back on and the wobble dissapears so it must be the tyres.
These tyres are supposed to be one of the best on the market, and looking at the 'tyre comparo' on this forum others have the same tyre - albeit a different size - and love 'em.
can anyone shed light?

By the way...... I love the triton otherwise!!

it sounds like one or more of the tyres is out of round. not sure why a tyre guy could not pick that up. :?
This car is like a bad drug habit. It is taking all my money and time, my family are concerned, but new mods just feel sooooooo good.

Same hassles with mine, ended up having to get them performance balanced (to the gram). Make sure they do a finger balance. They will never ride the same as H/T's but can be improved significantly with the right balancing.
