Factory size is 245/65 so 265 /65 is 26mm larger and 265 /70 is 54mm larger. I know technically the 70's are to large it's the 65's needing a 7.5" rim while the 70's can go on a 7" that has me confused. Been told by 2 separate tyre places both of whom looked it up in a data bok in front of me so pretty confident they're not?making it up.

that is what they say here http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-sel ... #techspecs

They may be telling the truth. Never seen anyone worry about fitting 265 to 7' rims before. 285's yes.

It is strange 265/70 or 75/16 can be fitted to 7" rims in that BFG link.

You would think the smaller side wall would fit the smaller rim on the 17s

the smaller sidewall height can cause the tyre to bulge more hence not many manufactures recommend

so the 31" 265/65/17 wide tyre is actually a weird fit to the 7" wide rim

think prado and pajero both have 7.5" wide rims as factory in that size fitment

run the gauntlet with the 32" fractionally over size 265/70/17

at least the tyre fitment is correct.

Really tempted to do just that, but have also been told (rightly or wrongly) that 70's would over tyre it

Planning on running a second set of wheels/tyres for mud only.

Currently running BFG's AT 265/65 r17 on some bling wheels. done 27000km/s since new and tread is down to 6mm on the rears (towing a heaving tandem trailer 24x7)

I am trying to stick to a budget. I presume I can change from the BFG's to Bridgestone AT's for general duties (remember towing a heavy tandem trailer 24x7) and the occasional offroad ? or other suggestions

Suggestions for rims and muddies. I have a 2" lift, chip, exhaust and dawes valve so power isn't an issue.

Sure. Dawes valve is not just a safety mechanism. Depending on how it's configured it can allow more boost (assuming that turbo is capable of providing it and ECU will allow it depending on what porkies the chip is telling the ECU).

Mine is currently set at 28psi. I can only get to about 24psi but, if I had factory setup, I wouldn't even get to that. I know of others who are running in the high 30s, but that needs special programming of the chip and turbo upgrade, plus other mods. Not recommended unless you have a bank account balance greater than the cost of a new engine.

if you putting on bigger tyres, is a speedo recalibration required?

No. A size or two above standard will actually make the speedo more accurate since they generally display around 7% higher than actual.

Mostly no they are 15" rims. Some claim that some 15' rims fit but you would need to test fit.
Also 33s are a very snug fit.

I have a Triton MN 2.5 diesel

I am considering Allied Wheels 16x7 6 bolt bore hole 110.5 offset +25

will these fit perfectly or will it have any dramas in terms of driving or any issues ? Not sure the stock bore hole and all that so thought to ask can I just fit them straight in or not.

Thank you

The centre bore hole/hub diameter on the Triton is a lot less than 110.5mm (it is 67.1mm)
As someone else said, you also need to ensure that the PCD is 6x139.7 (ie, 6 bolts arranged in a 139.7mm diameter circle).

The wheel manufacturer should be able to provide appropriate wheel hub rings to fit between the factory centre hub and the holes in the wheel. The Allied/Performance wheels on my MQ have these rings and it makes fitting the wheels much easier. I believe they are also recommended as they help to transfer load onto the centre hub and reduce load on the wheel studs. I have no idea if this is actually true, but I tend to err on the side of caution with regard to making sure wheels are safely attached to the vehicle.

If you are also getting the same rim for the spare, which you probably should so that you aren't running different offsets if you have to use the spare, you will need a spacer for the spare as well. If you try to fit a spare with a 110.5mm bore hole you will find the bit at the end of the chain will be in danger of moving sideways and pulling through the hole, which would be very bad if it happened while you were driving along. Alternatively you would have to alter the fitting on the end of the spare retaining chain.

So after lots of reading and trying to decide on a buying a second set of rims/MT for offroad only I am considering just running muddies 24x7.

I do tow a tandem trailer 24x7 practically so i presume they will cause excessive wear? extra rotations should solve that?

Currently my bfg at 265/65/r17 have done 30k and probably will get 20k more. Car and aftermarket rims/tyres are 18months. So if muddies last me 18 months with my current driving 90% road 10% mud i will be happy.

thoughts...

How often do you do real mud work? If it's 90% road now and 10% off road maybe real mud is only 10% of that, so 1% of the total. Is it worth putting up with less grip, higher wear and more noise for the 1% of the time that the muddies will actually be in their element?

There are plenty of A/Ts these days that perform reasonably well in mud. BFGs aren't one of those IMHO but the Bridgestones clear pretty well, as do the Mickey Thompsons. I'm sure there are others - just those two have impressed me out on the tracks. More rubber on the ground also means better grip in the non-mud off road situations while if you do any beach work the muddies will be a distinct disadvantage. TBH I can think of only a couple of occasions when my muddies have got me through situations that the A/Ts might not have.

I couldn't bear the thought of having the muddies on full time.

Have a look at the Summit/Kanati Trail Hogs... not sure on what sizes are available. They're a copy of the Goodyear Duratrac which are an aggressive all terrain, great on and off the road.

I haven't tried the Trail Hogs but they will most likely be my next set, I've had the Duratracs on previous vehicles and rate them highly but they're getting expensive now.
