David.. or Chris..

I went to a tyre dealer ( in my case, Bob Jane in Osborne Park.. ask for Marius, tell him Niel sent you, he'll look after you ), told him I'm looking to buy 5 tires + rims, want to go bigger, more aggressive, but still drive comfortable on the road, etc etc.

Marius went to the extent as to first test-fit a number of rims I liked to see if they will clear the callipers, look good etc.. He then showed me a couple of different tyres, ON MY VEHICLE, to make sure that I get what I want, and liked, and still is legal.

If they know you're about to drop $2k with them, they should go out of their way to make sure you're happy.. if they don't, go somewhere else. In my case.. Marius provided such good service, that I'll probably never shop anywhere else, and refer everyone I know to him..

Steel or alloy factory rims?

6" or 7" or 7.5"? I think some of the later ones were 17" - worth double checking.

Size of tyres makes no significant difference to CVs and while the bigger tyres may add a little more stress to the driveline it also is not appreciable. Your fuel consumption will increase and performance decrease.

Agree I have spoken to Marius and he's super helpful, the only thing he couldn't tell me was 265/70/17 would fit underneath

Sure. You'll use a bit more power to turn the bigger tyres and that may result in a little more strain on the driveline but the resultant increase in wear would be so small that you may not even be able to measure it.

I ran that size in muddies on my VR which had the 16x7 alloys and there was a noticeable difference in power compared to the 70 series that I had for on road use.

Couple of pics that show the difference:

mud tyre size for 2012 MN Glx Triton

Postby bengabby on Wed Mar 09, 2016 6:58 am

Hi there please bear with me as I am posting this for my husband and I may sound like I have no idea what I am talking about, truth is I don't. We have a 2012 MN GLX with road tyres on (245/70R16-111S) we have a spare set of rims and would like to put mud tyres on them (for when we are going off road). We were thinking of putting larger tyres on to get slightly more ground clearance. Any suggestions on sizes and brands etc would be appreciated, or should we just stick with the same size.

265/70R17 = 31.6X10.43R17

245/75R17 = 31.5X9.65R17

Almost the same size. Plenty fit the 265's.

265/70/16 30.5" or 265/75/16 31.6" are two popular sizes (245/70/16 are 29.5") 245/75/16 would also be a little bigger than standard.

something like Hankook Dynapro MT RT03

Steel Rims and tyres for 4WD Girl

Postby amyh4n on Wed Mar 23, 2016 9:56 am

Hi Guys

Triton MN GLR 2.5

I want to get steel wheels and good A/T tyres just wondering if you guys can guide me to the right direction.

Tyres- currently running Maxxis 700 265/70/16 wanto to upgrade either to BF Goodrich or Cooper A/Ts

Just wondering what's the max size I can go without any rubbing ( I don't have any lift)

Wheels- Want to get the steel wheels but not sure how to search them offset and all that ? should I stick with 16 or go 17 steelies. I saw plenty of them on ebay but not sure is they are any good or what brand ?

I really like look of these but not sure if these will be good and what size should I get ??

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/16X8-6-STUD- ... SwcldUaXiE

Any help would be much appreciated I would keep on reading on search directory for more information. :)

Guys I think I gathered enough info seems like if I run 265/75/16 tyres on +15 offset 16 by 8 steels wheels should be fine now the big questions is should I order those steel wheels from EBay or they will be crap. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with ebay steel wheels. Additionally can you guys approve what I am intending to run on stock car without any lift ?

amyh4n, I've moved your posts here since these questions have been asked a zillion times already and we monitor closely new threads on this subject. Please don't start multiple threads on the same subject.

Short answers are:

265/75R16 on +15 wheels will be fine (just) but you'll notice a reduction in performance and fuel economy with the bigger tyres.

Be very careful with steel wheels. There have been many instances of cheap steelies self destructing, to the point where they're banned in many mines and warnings issued by a number of authorities. Then there is the issue of weight - the steel wheels weigh more and will affect your braking and handling. Unless you intend to keep your stock wheels for a second set of tyres they'd be a safer and better bet than cheap steelies.

Bear in mind, too, that +15 is a bit of an unusual offset and you may find it a little difficult to find wheels in this configuration. +20 is more common and you won't notice the difference.

Amyh4n, I have a set(4) of King black Sunraisers 16x7 that I had on my ML. Not sure of offset but ran them as a second set with 265 75 16s no dramas. Happy to sell them for $100 if you cover postage. Pm me if you're interested and I'll send photos and when I get home I'll measure the offset.

Edit. +25 offset I'm quite sure.

Check the PCD.. pretty sure you need 6 stud 139.7.

http://www.newtriton.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=8337

Otherwise, all good...

... but if you are struggling with finding something, sometimes it just helps to go to a tyre/wheel place that can get most brands in and ask them what works.

Ok so what am I missing here, went tyre shopping. Looking for 265/65/17, told they're illegal on 7" rims have to be 7.5". Then told I can put 265/70/17 on the rim legally but as they're 54mm oversize they're illegal. WTF??

What brand/model of tyre?
Have they got those sizes the wrong way around. It is linked to side wall height and width.

A quick search and some brands of 265/75/17 are speced for 7" wide rims.

Mostly you are allowed 50mm bigger diameter than standard.
