Random tyre questions

Postby mattz on Fri Sep 23, 2011 11:24 pm

I know you don't want to stuff around with swapping wheels but..... You could always replace the one alloy that is damaged buy a set of steelies and new muddies and run the tyres that are on the alloys until they are stuffed and see how you go with that...it's not really a big job swapping them over and you could justify running something more aggressive that would wear a little quicker.
Also by replacing the damaged one you can sell them as a set.... No one wants just 3 rims.
I also run an MK wheel winder with my steelie.... Its only 2 bolts to change it over. ;)

just for my general Knowledge. what does the pi symbol represent on the rim and what does the T mean after the Pi?

My old carolla had ROH adrenalin's on them it was stamped with a Pi symbol, my BT50 came with the stock rims also a Pi symbol. so its across a range of rims

I don't know either. Pi to me equals 3.1416 approximately or more crudely 22/7. Why it is on a rim I have no idea.

Usually Jap rims have a JIS symbol on them which I guess is just a standard.
The voices in my head may not be real, but they do have some damned good ideas.

17 inch tyres & wheels on 07 GLX-R

Postby desblaze on Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:41 pm

Hi All,

Just look for opinions on the subject. Thinking of getting a set of 17 inch GLX-R mags instead of the standard 16 inch one. one to get a bit more ground clearance and two to help fill the wheel arches a bit better. I haven't installed a lift kit first but it will becoming soon. Do you guys see and issue with this or am I just waiting money that could be spent on other things for the car.

17 inch tyres & wheels on 07 GLX-R

Postby tukadafoonday on Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:46 pm

Keep the 16s and put bigger tires on then. If you go more than 50mm they won't be legal... But even if you go to 17s your rolling diameter will remain the same unless you increase the tire size.

16's have a much wider selection of tyres available cheaper - although there are more 17's becoming available lately.

I have std 17's as my road tyre but went 16's with 265/75 for my MT off road tyres due to availability and price.

Choice is yours mate but I would try the bigger tyres first and MT's unless you do a lot of road K's as you are in the Isa.

There are a heap of tyre threads on here mate, have a search.

I will move this thread a bit later when get a chance.

No Worries Homer. I have BF AT's 255/70/16's at the moment and aren't a bag tyre for road or on the dirt. I think I will upgrade to the 265 in the near future.

If you want an AT tire I can highly recommend coopers st maxx... Good wet and dry grip... A little noisy but not unbarable... And pretty aggressive for an AT.

You can buy mine if you like they only have 5000km on them :p

I should have gpt muds as a play set and kept HT for daily drive.

Should I stay with the one I know? Coopers LTZ

Postby Tony on Sat Jan 14, 2012 11:41 am

Well, the time has got close, the trusty 265/70/17 Coopers LTZ's are near their life expectancy and I was about to throw another set on then bloody Cooper brings out the AT3 and ST MAXX. Both claimed to be better than the LTZ... ST MAX is even stronger. I'm liking that idea.

Buggered if I know, may just toss a coin.  Leaning to the ST MAX as dont have such things as play tyres, so should do as an all rounder. Was quoted 430 a corner though!

Like tukafoonday I can vouch for the St maxx. Little noisy but give good grip and seem to be wearing well done nearly 10,000 and seem hardly worn. I paid 330 a corner for 245/75r16. I realise its a larger tyre but a $110 difference seems a little steep. Maybe shop around...

Yea, I'll have a shop around.... I tried to get a bit off but the supplier crapped on about warranty and insurance by the coopers approved wholesaler/importer. Words to the effect, if I can find them cheaper the warranty/insurance may be not valid so be careful. I'm looking into this. :?

Random tyre questions

Postby motoz on Sat Jan 14, 2012 1:07 pm

If the guarantee is like the MT one you have to take them in every 10000km for a balance and rotation. Do that 8 times about $200, to get 50% off full retail on a replacement set if they didn't last 80000kms... bit of a scam me thinks.

If you looked after them and they didn't go the distance why would you want them again ?

I just rotate mine during my normal services.

Pirelli 265x70xr17 affect fuel economy ?

Postby kmb on Mon Jan 30, 2012 1:05 pm

I bought 4x 265,70,r17 and fitted on my Triton along tough dog suspension and lifted 2 inch.

My Triton used to take me around more than 800km per full tank, but it dropped to 600km once i changed the tyres, i want to know what's cause this? is it possible from the tires?

Thanks

are you adding in the greater distance traveled for the 600klms on the ODO for the bigger tyres?

fuel economy will suffer from the bigger tyres somewhat.

A lift kit will affect your fuel economy simply because the engine has to work harder to push a larger object through the air. Tyres will also affect it as there is a greater weight that needs to be moved, requiring more torque and therefore more fuel. 600km from full to the fuel light is pretty normal for a lifted triton on 32's

See the build up of my old Triton here.

If you had 245 size tyres and have now gone to 265 size your odo would be out, I think you need to times it by 1.07 to get your actual new odo reading of km's travelled.

If you have an auto that will contribute to not being geared for the 265's where the manuals handle tyre size changes much better.

For economy I run my 245's roadies, for off road I run my 265 muddies.

To me the lift kit did zip and is negligible in this scenario.

So, if you have auto and 265's expect to lose economy, maybe not to what you are seeing if you do the adjustment I suggested.

Man I dream of 600 a tank, my light comes on routinely around 450 :? I'm running 255s with a lift and since adding front and rear bars and winch haven't seen any real change in economy...

Another question, since BFG M/T KM2 finally starts selling 285 75 17, I'm wondering if it is possible to fit them without rubbing the tyres with 2 inch lift?

Werent you just complaining about 32's......now you want 33's

Most 33's (285/75/17) will be fine with just a 2" lift......you may need to remove the mud flaps but shouldnt need to trim the inner guard or anything. It will only be the inside edge of the front tyres (where the mud flap is) that will touch. It will be fine everywhere else.

Heaps of threads and info already on that tyre size if you use search ;)

Your fuel economy has increased by about 2lts per 100 with the 32's now fitted.......pretty standard result. You have to remember your tyres are 7% bigger......so you are doing 7% more k's than what the ODO is reading ;)

Nah, sorry, that post was from another person who was accessing my laptop thinking he is on his account. Apologies.

Yes, I tried the search engine on this forum, with 285 * 75 * 17, no result came up only 285 75 16 or 285 70 17.
