They will fit, but would only be suitable for easy driving untill you get a lift.

I would say they will most definetly rub on full lock without the lift.

Also depends if you have a bar on the front, cos then the weight will bring the front down even more and make the 285's an even tighter squeeze

They will rub on the plastic guards on the front wheels but that can be fixed by panel beating the guards so to speak to pull them forward on the front of the guard and back on the rear side of the front guards.

Suspension lifts don't eliminate the problem they just make it so for street driving you don't scrub but once the wheel/tyre travels up it'll still scrub without doing the above mods.

Not really because I haven't done mine yet 8-)

I did post some pics up showing where mine scraped I'll see if I can find them.

The following is required for the front wheel arches:

front: pull the trim forward and fix with some plastic ties or equivalent

back (of front arch): remove the plastic guards and panel beat where the sheets end then pin the plastic guard back against it.

ive got 305s and they only just scrub at half lock full articulation on the front, nothing during normsal driving only 4x4ing.. 285s should be no issue.. ive cut off the bit that protrudes on the mudflap only.. not sure about the front as i have a bullbar

tritor yours are 305/70 right? That's the same outer diameter as the 285/75 mate just wider.

That thread shows where they'll scrub ML. The fix should be obvious from there.

I think tritor has less rubbing and clearance issues as he runs 30+ offset rims :)

Definitely should be the case but I think his rubbing sounds the same as mine which gives me the impression his wider tyres are the cause. i.e 30mm wider tyres gives similar effect to lower offset rims

guys- what are the 'actual' diameters of your tyres? i'm on 265/75 which should work out to 804mm diameter, but running the tape over them they're close enough to 790mm. the reason i ask is i'm looking at getting a weekend set of muds- the 285/75/16 Silverstone mt117 sports and they have a 840mm diameter- i know you guys are running them, but are they this sort of diameter or are they coming in smaller than 840mm?

i know this means running outside with the tape measure but it'd be a great help

Hmm-might be pushing to get them under then- the other option is to get mongrels- not my 1st choice but i suppose they'll do the job

Update on mine: so its clear I'm running +5 offset wheels with 285/75/16 BFG muds and a 50mm dobinsons lift.

I did the panel beating on the weekend and then put the front arch mud flap back on and it scrubbed still :(

So much in fact that when I went to park it and pull it back off I ripped it off the mount :x

I was very pissed off at the time but I can see that the stock mud flaps are unnecessarily too thick so I'm going to get some sheet rolled and pressed to do the job (i.e stop mud spraying up the side of the car).

It seems that my problem is the offset of the wheels combined with my larger tyres but I can still get around it and I like them so I'm sticking it out.

p.s if you take the liners off take close note of which plugs, screws and bolts go where or it'll be a task putting them back on. Was for me at least since I took them off about 3 months back and it took me about 3 hours to put them back on with the wheels of though I did stop and start a little. :(

Stock rims! I heard alot of bad things about fitting the coopers on the stock 7" rim, as the belts are not running straight they are running awkward! But this was coming from tyrepower, who also was trying to sell me rims! Does your truck handle like crap with them on?

Its not just from tyrepower, ML, Mickey thompson told me the same as I've mentioned before you should be running 8" rims for 285s. Seems like short term there's no issue rick will have to let us know how they go long term.

The reason I'm scrubbing must be that I'm running the wrong offsets. I knew this would push the limit and I could see it could be worked around so I'm not too fussed anymore just have to get a set of flaps made up for it that aren't as bulky and I'm fine.

265/285 with Lifted Suspension

Postby BarryIRL on Thu Aug 31, 2017 6:55 pm

Hi All, Barry from Ireland, just bought a 2008 Animal spec L200 and am looking at wheel/tire options.

Before I start please don't flame me, I have been trawling through various forums (worldwide at this stage) and trawling through the wheel and tire section of the series 4 section of this forum, trying to get clarity on my conundrum!

I am installing a spacer/shackle lift, have it bought and ready to install (supposedly 3" front, 2" rear - strut spacers, shackles & balljoint spacers). I get it that both 265 and 285 75 16's will fit, albeit with a bit of trimming for the 285's.

My query is more related to the fact that there are so many reported problems with the 285 vs the 265.

I had decided up until a couple of days ago it was going to be 265's however my problem is that I don't want the wheels to look tiny with the lift, I get it, its only an inch, but after trawling this site, and through google images, the inch sometimes looks very important, and other times minimal.

Im looking at toyo open country mud tires on black steel wheels, would any of you be so kind as to post some pictures of your lifted tritons with a 265 75 16 tire?

I don't want the hardship associated with 285's and trimming etc.. but equally don't want the wheels to look tiny under the lift.

Id appreciate your assistance in confirming my decision... i'm 2 weeks now pondering... I just want to get it done.. thanks!

And if I have missed this somewhere along the way when trawling I do apologise, please point me in the direction and lock me down!
